Default FICM FAIL!

Well, a 6.0 with 240k shows up at our shop with poor running/cold start issues. Initially, hope some Rev-X would be a cure all, but couldn't even get the thing started about 0-10 degrees F with block heater plugged in for 6+ hours. Still does not start after being pulled into and sitting in heated shop overnight. It would fire once and that would be it, and yet somehow they drove it here. Decide to check FICM voltage on lug under cover. Key on...46v for about a split second and drop to 13-18v. With all the writeups on DIY solder repairs I figured I'd give it a try after doing my own 140V IDM mod. Disassembled... inspect... repair NOT possible, at least not just the solder job. See pictures below, one side good, one side NOT good. Picked up a FICM from Ford. Got ECM/TCM rollback at same time as FICM programming(by PHP of course). Truck's running, but still somewhat poorly. Rev-X treatment following programming made a noticeable difference fairly quickly. Other needed repairs included EGR valve cleaning and ICP sensor replacement. Changing the ICP sensor on the 03 is not fun at all. Still kind of a dog on low end, so turbo vanes are another issue to look into. Even after all that I still kind of want one...

Must be from driving those that actually run good.

Since the truck was rolled back, it should be using the EBP again. Have you checked the EBP sensor, they were famous of failing or pluging up, and giving the truck low power issues.

just a thought

Good thought. I remember now that I have read about the EBP sensor being used with the rollback, now that you mention it. I also came across some information about a VGT relearn being necessary after a ECM flash on the earlier 6.0s. Most of the posts I've found about that seem to be from 2007-ish. Any truth to that?

The VGT re-learn from what I remember is for the 03-04's that were flashed to ignore the EBP. 2007 is probably about the time that the non-ebp flashes came out, so your probably right.
