On most 6.0L trucks, the
FICM helps with fuel economy and off-idle response while the programmer helps with overall performance. If you are staging your modifications, you'll need to decide which is more important up front... economy or performance.
The only problem with getting a salvage
FICM unit is that you have no idea of the condition of the unit and with all the Inductive Heating strategies out there killing FICMs, it's possible that any unit you get may be on its last legs. Sadly, new units are $800 which makes it sort of cost prohibitive for most folks.
It's a tough call. Many salvage yards do NOT offer any sort of warranty on electronic components (ECMs, FICMs, etc.) so if you get it and it's bad, then you're out of luck.
