Clap 6.9 idi dies going up hill

My buddy has a 84 6.9 idi with 54000 miles in it. His neighbor gave it to him. He put a new pump on it and runs good on flat land. As soon as he goes up a medium hill the truck dies. Any help would be great.

Check lift pump pressure while this is happening.

Alot of injector pump failures are the result of a weak lift pump, this could be the root cause.
