Hi all,
I have read everything i could find on this setup. one thing i have not found the answer for is can you modify the "standard" tunes you get with the software chip burner package? What i am looking to do is use the standard tunes (possible tweak shifting and tc lockup as everyone seems to have thier own preferences) for now as my truck is stock and adjust the software as i make hardware changes. I feel comfortable with this as i can learn along the way. If i have to start from scratch I feel this is out of my reach.

I feel comfortable with this as i can learn along the way. If i have to start from scratch I feel this is out of my reach.Stock trucks are one thing....but adding hardware such as injectors REALLY requires changes to the tuning to operate properly and safely.

To do it more directly, go to that post, and then right-click on the post number itself (up in the left corner). This is different from DP tuner for example. you cannot modify his tunes or add your own tunes to empty spaces on his F5 or F6 chips for example. If you want to tune additional vehicles you will need to purchase the MDF files for the specific hex code. if it happens to be a PCM in the same family you don't need additional MDF's Cody can tell ya all about that I think he has a whole collection of them he has never used as there is only a few OEM PCM files that are really good like the PMT1 EBM1 etc... you may have to disable the PATS or reprogram it with something like AutoEngunity software.. :cheesy smile:

This is also correct. By family, DJ means the "DPC" code. DPC-203, DPC-402, DPC-411, etc.

Yeah. :cursin: In addition, there are a lot of definition files (mdf) that will work with other families......but not all of the correct values will match up. Some binary will, most won't.

That's mostly true. Yes, PMT1 is my absolute favorite as I tow a lot and I'm not in what most would call a high altitude (3900 ft.). However, listening to a lot of other people (especially in altitudes like yours DJ), the PMT1 is not the best for towing there. I don't know this for a fact, but certain other codes do not have such....uh..."abrasive" converter lockup strategy.

PATS....what a joke. GM has had a similar system for many years (Pass-Key. 3 versions of it) and every one is a piece of garbage.

Even after the chip is installed some pcm's work better than others? ie pmt-1 pmt-2 are better than xxx-x. I am unsure what my code is I will look tonight.


How much of a difference doesit make? Can my xxx-x be turned in to a pmt-1 or 2? Or is a swap required? Where to purchase, average price, worth the cost?

His code is XLE-4 and mine is NVK-4 is there any way I could get away with using just one set of files and still tuning both trucks? Thanks for the help

NVK4 "officially" uses a VNAA8 definition while the XLE4 uses the VHAE9 definition. Trying to use either one of these files with the "wrong" definition will not work. Some things "line up" in the parameters, maps, and functions but most do not and it would be impossible to tune.

The right thing to do would be to buy both definitions and get the base files for each truck. However, with the expense of purchasing both, it might not be financially feasible to do. Besides unless he absolutely HAS to live with his XLE4, it's not worth trying to tune it to do anything worthwhile.

What I would do in your case would be to upgrade his truck to a DPC-422 PCM (his is a DPC-402 now) and both of you could run any tuning you wanted to; be it both NVK4, PMT1, or whatever you wish since they'd be in the same family.

Checking classifieds on diesel truck websites or wrecking yards. I have purchased 5 used ones in the last 2 months and have not paid more than $100 for any of them. They are available from NAPA and Carquest/O'Reilly/Bumper to Bumper but they'll run nearly $200 before the core charge (which I don't think they'll care if you give them an XLE4 for a core because they don't know).

It's a plug and play deal when going from a DPC-402 to a 422. It's just not as easy to go the other way since the BARO sensor input on the older truck is external for the XLE4; it'll shift weird/hard and have a check engine light. You won't have any problems with a DPC-422 swap into your dad's truck.
