Im looking at purchasing a used gryphon and having custom tune written for my truck but im curious to what specific advantages i will gain with a 98 f150 with a 4.2 and manual trans.
furthermore would i be better off going with the gryphon or an xcal2 or 3?
any help is more than welcome

This is a good question and I frankly don't have a good answer. I suspect ANY programmer will give you roughly equivalent benefits, but, many of the performance gains in a programmer come from a more intelligent shifting strategy for the "idiot" transmissions that were developed for people that are so uncoordinated that they can't drive manual shift vehicles. (If I sound like I'm not real fond of automatics, you're reading me correctly). :giggle:
There are changes to the fueling strategy, cam timing, ignition timing and so on that should provide some gain however.
I think a real tuner like Bill needs to answer this.

Like Jack said, you will see some improvement but the biggest change in performance relies on your hand and foot with a standard tranny.
