Air filters

Do tunes have to be adjusted depending on what air filter you have? I have a K&N(cotton/oil ) air filter now. Looking at going back to a paper filter(possibly the aFe Pro-Dry ). But need to first know if tunes need to be tweaked differently to accommodate different filters.

No, they don't. A "drop in" filter has no effect on the tunes (as long as it was "oiled" properly if it was the "oiled" kind). If the oiled filter is not set up properly, it will probably make the engine run like crap.

Personally, I would not use anything but an OEM filter. I have no information on the aFe Pro-Dry you are considering. What, in your opinion, makes it superior? Since it's a "drop in", it can't really have a greater filtration area and, if it filters to a smaller micron size, it will cut off airflow. Of course it COULD let in more air if it allowed more crud into the engine, but removing the filter altogether will do that too. :hehe:

Not superior per se. I just hate the oil process of the K&N(oil filters). The aFe Pro-Dry uses a synthetic fabric. No oil but can still be washed and reused forever.

For $62.00 I would hope it might last a while. Notice there's no real "lifetime" estimate. I dunno, I find paper filters are pretty "convenient" and don't really have to be changed all that often.

Let me know what you think, I've never seen them. Just tried their website and couldn't find any for pre-2009 though. The only reason I use the oiled filter is because I constantly have to clean my air filter. Went about 10 K on my paper filter and it isn't in that bad of shape but since I got the oiled filter I have to clean it every 3k. I'm not gonna complain about cleaning my intake filter more often since it is the only fine particle protection the engine has. :hehe:

Will do. J&J was actually right about the price. $38 was the "starting low as" price. Once I entered in my specific truck, it was $56 or something. No harm though as I needed to spend $75 for my coupon to count so got a new dash pod as well.

It seems fine enough. It's slightly larger then the K&N while retaining the same basic shape.

I was gonna suggest the Amsoil replacement for half the price. It's good for 100k and to be cleaned at 25k with low pressure air or low suction vacuum. Mine's due a cleaning this weekend due to being in severly dusty fields the last several weeks. Gonna clean the MAF sensor while I'm at it. Then hopefully next week I'll be tuning it up with a Gryphon.

Whats the best way to clean the MAF sensor? Going to be getting some maintanence work done soon. Would be a good time to clean mine probably.

If I remember correctly you carefully take off the boot and undo the holding screws. Then unplug it and spray it very well with MAF sensor cleaner. Just be careful not to touch the little wire because they are the sensors. Let it dry a bit then reinstall.

Here's a great link. Very descriptive with great pics. I bought the actual MAF cleaner, but the stuff in the pics works fine.

Here's a great intake mod if you haven't done it already. I think is a modded GOTTS mod. I did it and made another for my cousin.

Yea, I've done the intake mod. Bill recommended I do it when my S&B(with custom tunes) was causing issues. Think I posted pics here somewhere, or at f150online. Thanks for the link anyway though.

I'll see if i can get away tomorrow and get some MAF cleaner.
