So...a bunch of people are running the Hot Rod cams in their Mustangs, I'm even thinking about throwing them in my car, even though I know I could get more power with blower cams, you just can't get that sound with any other mild cam out there without phaser limiters. Now, my 5.4 in the truck has the same heads as my 'Stang, and the cams are for either the 4.6 or the 5.4, but I haven't heard of anyone putting them in their truck. They're supposed to be good for about 20-25 h.p. on the 4.6 so I can only imagine with the extra displacement that the 5.4 would LOVE them. They lose ZERO torque down low on the 4.6, I wonder how the powerband on the 5.4 would respond to them. Has anyone seen a truck with those cams, or videos of people who do, or dyno sheets, or know anyone running those cams in their truck?

And a question for Bill...could you tune for them?

Any input is appreciated.

I imagine this is the kind of a challenge Bill would love, but wouldn't he have to do it "in person"?

That one brought back memories of how my 69 f100 sounded. It had a 302 and she was bored thirty over and had a high lift cam a touch of lift over a rv one. Just ran a 600 2 bbl on her and that was quite enough.

Dang, I think I might have my next item on my to-do list!

I live close enough, I'll volunteer to let Bill do the "on-site" trial run testing on :)

People are having success with e-mail tunes once the tuner can fix the idle issues that are associated with running the cams on a stock tune. I don't know how many different configurations of cai, exhaust, etc with the cams he'd actually have to have installed and tuned, or if it's a matter of tweaking for predetermined values to find the sweet spot.

Hey Grabber523

Have you put the brisk plugs in the truck yet?

No, just got my 35" Toyo MTs on last weekend. This is the first weekend I've had to myself in over a month and I spent it cleaning the garage so I could tear down the Mustang and fix leaks, replace fluids, and give her a good once-over before the track opens up and cruise nights start again...it's finally nice enough up here to justify going outside. The truck just hit 35,000 miles and if I don't do it soon, it could get ugly!

Did some intel on those cams. Sounds like 4 different mfgs and each one has 2-4 options. Stay away from one of them I forget who they are, they sell regrinds. Ford racing of course is the most $$$$. Comp cams is the most favorable. If your not running tunes already the cams sound painless but if ARE running tunes you had better contact your tuner BEFORE you consider this mod especially for the bigger ones.

Yeah, I know about the different cam manufacturers, specs, grinds, who to look into and who to avoid, which ones are regrinds, which ones require phaser and/or spring mods, etc. I've been obsessing about cam selection for the Stang all winter...I'm just curious about the FRPP Hot Rod cams in the 5.4L specifically. Not too much info out there.

I have been looking at doing cams for my truck for a month now. If I do get them can Bill write a custom tune for em?
