The Conversation Pit This is where EVERYTHING else goes. No subject is too mundane. How's the weather in your area? Did your kid cut his first tooth? Really, what do you think about the President? And don't get me started on Cummins and Duramaxes. Have at it!

Default Security system nightmare!

Here's one to chew on.
Recently on a harley forum a user posted a help for his bike not starting in his driveway.
He kinda got flamed at first but then it went to the serious side.
His problem was he could go ride his bike all over the place and it would start right when away from his parking spot in his garage. Every time at home he would have to do a keyed overide of the security system so he could start it(pain in the butt).
Over a months worth of fixes and suggestions were posted and none of them worked.
He brought it to the dealer and had a new security module put in and that still didn't work at his house. Baffled and frustrated he powered down everything in his house. Didn't work!
He knew it was a frequency issue so he even talked his neighbors into powering down there houses and he did his again.
Didn't work!
He is really tired of this problem by now and getting mad.
So he hires a ham radio operator to come out with his frequency finding devices and figure out what is going on and in less than 10 minutes found it!
You want to know what it was?
The backup battery in his tahoe's aftermarket security system was dead!
So the system was throwing out a constant distress/help signal overriding the bikes security's frequency.
Evidently the pager fob that read the signal was never provided to him when he bought the vehicle used. He only got the spare backup fob.
A new $8 battery in the tahoe security system and the bike starts at his house now!

Lars, that's a great post! Just shows how all these wireless things are competing for space on the airwaves, doesn't it? And, the problem can only get worse.

I believe I posted once how I could not disable the alarm on an older truck (so I could get in) because I'd parked it fairly close to the antenna farm for our TV stations here. Same principle, I believe. I finally just had to let the alarm go off, open the hood and then disconnect the alarm from the battery (I fortunately had the tools to do it and knew exactly where the ground wire to the alarm was).
