My 2006 F250 FX4

New to the forum and have read a little, but would like to open a discussion on my truck and get some advice.
It is a 2006 F250 6.0 FX4 with about 125K.
I bought it wrecked and fixed it for a nice price. I know I want to put a monitor on it to watch for signs of egr failure which brought me to a crossroad. Do I want/need a tuner? Or just a monitor?
I have been reading enough to decide that I am interested in FICM reprogramming b/c I get 11mpg in town...
But I am not real sure if I want to hop it up more than that. It seems to have really good power compared to what I use to drive and until I decide if I want to do any mods I am not sure if I want a big H.P. tune.
At any rate if you wouldn't mind putting in your 2 cents on setups pro's and cons I would appreciate any advice.

Thanks,
Richard

After reading some other posts it seems like my mpg's are lower than most people who did rollbacks. I wonder if I have other issues causing poor mpg?
Is the only way to find out what strategy you have is with a programmer?

If your happy with the power then its best to leave it alone. However you will need a programmer to see what your ficm and PCM program is. Or have the ford dealer tell you.

Thanks Jeremy,

Do you know if I can read FMIC Stratagy with a matco genesis scan tool?
My friend has one.

Well I guess I am on the fence, I want to get just a cs insight to monitor my motor in hopes to catch the oil cooler and egr problem before it happens. however I can't help but think about just getting the cs or cts with the tunes. Then I had to run across this site and fing out that there may be ecm/fcim stratagies that will hurt my perfomance if I get a cs/cts tunner. So now I am trying to discuss options with people, I am trying to read as much as I can in the meantime...

Playing with the idea of
1.insight and sct or 6 position chip
2.cs tunner

Thease options get affected b/c I think I need ecm/fcim stratagies changed along with my choice...

Where do you live?

You have two options, there are no 6 position chips for the 6.0's. That is a 7.3 item.

If you want to get tunes, just order a CS and when it comes you be able to see what your hex code is. If its a code you don't like then you'll know the code and can have the truck rolled back. But you'll have the canned tunes on the CS, and if you like them leave it alone, if you don't you can order custom tunes for it.

or....

You can also order the insight CS and that will tell you your hex code, and then order custom tunes for an SCT from PHP or another vendor.

Thanks for the reply's Jeremy,
I'm in Louisiana,

Looking at how they were starting to offer custom tuning software for the 6.0 guess I made the assumption it would come with a 6 position chip. It must just re-flash the ECM?

So it boils down to just deciding on sct or cs/cts... It will not affect the tunes that come with them "canned tunes" if I decide to do ecm/ficm rollbacks?

Jeremy Wed, February 1st, 2012 08:54 PM

Right, it doesnt really matter what your hex code is when it comes to "canned" tunes.....just the custom ones.
