Could a compression check, rule out a bent push rod or bad valve?

I've seen a vid where someone was checking for compression with a digital graphing gauge through the exhaust. I guess a weak reading meant bad compression. Seems like it would be easier to check that way to see if you need to pull the covers off??? It would be cool if you could do that, then get it to sync with an OBDII scanner to see which cylinder was firing to see which was getting bad compression.
