The Conversation Pit This is where EVERYTHING else goes. No subject is too mundane. How's the weather in your area? Did your kid cut his first tooth? Really, what do you think about the President? And don't get me started on Cummins and Duramaxes. Have at it!

Default Getting you started on Cummins

These things never fail, right?

275K and the timing gear case gasket poked out. $31 gasket.....$1200 labor.

Not familiar with Cummins. What's with the little hose clamps?

Holding the tappets - have to pull the camshaft out to get the gear case housing off. The more mainstream method is using wooden dowels and rubber bands or string to hold them up.

Putting on hose clamps is a bit more tedious but it's peace of mind for me....because dropping a tappet means a lot more work! They will fall into the pan and there's no easy way to get them back in with the engine in the frame.

Damn, I had no idea. That sucks!

Interesting what you have to do to get to the cover. Must be a real treat pulling that cam out.
