Default Gryphon with the 4.2 and M5OD

Im looking at purchasing a used gryphon and having custom tune written for my truck but im curious to what specific advantages i will gain with a 98 f150 with a 4.2 and manual trans.

furthermore would i be better off going with the gryphon or an xcal2 or 3?

any help is more than welcome

This is a good question and I frankly don't have a good answer. I suspect ANY programmer will give you roughly equivalent benefits, but, many of the performance gains in a programmer come from a more intelligent shifting strategy for the "idiot" transmissions that were developed for people that are so uncoordinated that they can't drive manual shift vehicles. (If I sound like I'm not real fond of automatics, you're reading me correctly).

There are changes to the fueling strategy, cam timing, ignition timing and so on that should provide some gain however.

I think a real tuner like Bill needs to answer this.

Like Jack said, you will see some improvement but the biggest change in performance relies on your hand and foot with a standard tranny.
