Help Help...Diesel Dies

Truck started to just die recently. Off like a light switch. No codes. No hiccups. No lights. No warning. (I have replaced the CPS Once..a while ago)

1st time I was towing my TT coming down a grade. Off. Would not start back up. Crank fine. Wouldnt even bark. About an hour goes by and it restarted ran fine and drove it home 2hrs.

Took it into my local diesel performance shop (Performance Authority...great bunch of guys) they checked it all out. No codes other than some Cam code they said was probably from cranking on it so much. They checked all my connections..IIPR? everything looked ok.

2nd time same thing...only this time not towing...about 45 minutes into a drive and like a light switch. Off. Started back up after about 30 minutes, made it another mile and off again...this time for about an hour. Started back up and made it home....Starting to seem like heat is causing it...cools off and fires up again.

Starting to think maybe my chip is going bad...so i pull it out....let it idle for about 40 minutes and then go for a drive...died in about 5 miles...crank crank crank...nothing...let it sit 45 minutes and started up and made it another mile...

towed it home...it started right up...Replaced the CPS tonight...let it idle about 20 minutes was getting ready to test drive and it died in the driveway....WTF!!!

Someone that has any ideas please help? More than frustrated now.
Erik

The 1st suspect in this situation is the IPR. You need to be reading IPR duty cycle as you drive it.

Keep an eye on your tach too, if it does not register any RPM while cranking chances are your CPS is bad.

Also, watch ICP when its not starting. If it does not build to over 500psi the engine will not start.

I was always told that this will not work on a 02-03 7.3

....I think everyone does it. I've been corrected a time or too. Just didn't want him chasing a problem that might not be there.

So only way to read starting rpm's is by the OBD2 port?

A lab scope or DMM will do it too, you just need to e quick enough to catch it when it fails.
