89 octane

Okay here is my stupid question for the day (I usually ask at least one a day

)..If I am running the 87 octane canned performance (#2tow) tune and I wanted to put 89 octane in my truck with that tune, do I need to change a setting on my programmer? (bare with me guys, I don't play with the thing like most of you guys do)......

I'm happy to bear with you - look at all the stupid things I ask!

You DON'T have to make any changes, but you probably should reload the Level 2 tune, select "Load Previous Settings" to get any custom values you had before and THEN, go to the Timing entry and add 1 degree to your timing, to get as much value out of the higher priced gas as you can. If you notice any "ping", just back the timing down to zero again.

You can adjust the timing up .5 for every octane number higher than the canned. So in this case you can adjust the timing up 1 degree. Just remember if you set it to high it can cause pinging in the engine and cause damage.

Well after posting that reply, I went and looked in the manual because I remember seeing something diffent about the timing...Straight from the manual....

"Page 18" " A good general rule is to increase timing .5 counts for every octane count you go up. For example, if you are running 93 octane fuel in level three, you could safely increase the timing 1.5 counts"

Now I have always read about the .5 adjustment , so is that a missprint or is that stating the most that you can get away with?

Thanks guys, I haven't put anything but 87 in my truck since getting my gryphon...I was just wondering. I see everyone commenting about increasing for 93 with a level 3 tune (because of 91)....I just didn't know if it was the same thing with the level 2 87 tune. The programmer book said for for the 87 performance tune, that running that tune with 89 would be an improvement (in so many words not exactly quoted)....I just didn't realize you had to adjust the timing. Since I am not really a mechanic and I'm not afraid to take on the cavemen stuff (turning some bolts), like in the ole days...i'm 58, but with all this computer stuff ..it can get scary! I for one won't be doing my own tune ups and I don't mind giving my cash to Bill to do that for me!
