Shout it Out Engine Failure Survey Raw Data

Hey, Everyone... thanks for being so patient! We finally received all the data we'd been waiting for from vendors involved in the survey , and at this point, this survey is now closed.

so much to everyone who took the time to respond. We are confident that the information collected will be useful in identifying engine failure trends.

Below you will find a link to the results from the Engine Failure Survey that has been available since October. If you choose to view the data, please be aware of the following:

Vendor bashing will not be tolerated, and there will be swift and severe consequences for members who choose to do so. This is your only warning.

  • The data was collected by a third party -- NOT by Power Hungry Performance -- and there is no way for us to alter the data.
  • We posted information and a link to the survey on the PHP forum, PSN, PSO, FTE, and TDS; a thread was also started on at least one additional forum. We did our best to keep these posts bumped up so that they would be seen by as many members as possible. Yes, we understand that not every driver who experienced engine failure is necessarily a member on these -- or any, for that matter -- forums. We did the best we could to get the word out and offer everyone a chance to have his voice heard.
  • The purpose of the survey is strictly a fact finding mission to try and offer some explanations for why engines have failed. It is NOT meant to be a jumping off point for insults or finger pointing. Bill has been asked many times for his opinion about miscellaneous engine failures, especially those relating to "windowed" blocks. After reading hundreds of posts on this subject, speaking to dozens of owners and manufacturers, reviewing carnage photos, and comparing countless files from damaged engines, he had some theories. However, without gaining data from drivers who experienced engine failure firsthand, he didn't feel he had enough information to provide an accurate assessment.
  • Survey takers' personal information has been filtered out of the raw data. Also, some questions have fewer than 49 responses; generally, this is because we added the questions AFTER some people had already taken the survey -- NOT because they skipped the questions.
  • We have read posts on various forums where members have encouraged others NOT to answer the survey. We have also read posts implying that the purpose of PHP creating this survey is simply to make another tuner look bad. How ridiculous when PHP, Edge, Superchips, and Diesel Power are among the tuning companies listed!
  • Please know that an engine failure attributed to Bean's Diesel was NOT tuned by Jonathan; it was from older tuning contracted through another tuner.
  • By no stretch do we believe that there are only 49 7.3L PSD owners who have experienced engine failure. In fact, we know this to be unrealistic. Statistically speaking, however, this sample group is valid.

We have contacted several tuners to find out the number of tunes they have in service. This number is more accurate than the number of chips sold, as different chips hold different numbers of calibrations.
  • TS Performance (Dennis) - ~600,000 (Dennis was unable to determine the number of programmed chips sold since 2003, so this includes blank chips as well)
  • Bill - ~164,000 (includes Superchips, Diesel Power, Edge, and PHP; since we do not own Superchips or Edge, we are not at liberty to disclose exact sales figures for either company)
  • DP-Tuner (Jody) - ~60,000
  • Diesel Innovations (David) - ~12,000
  • Total Diesel Performance (Tony) - ~6,000
  • Swamp's Diesel (Jonathan) - ~6,000
  • Bean's Diesel (Jonathan) - ~800
  • Gearhead (Matt) - ~780
  • Innovative Diesel - Preferred not to participate
  • Bully Dog - We don't know anyone over at Bully Dog and thought it would be quite awkward to contact them asking for the number of calibrations they have in service. If someone from BD would like this information included, please feel free to PM Groovy Chick, and I'll make sure to get it on here!
  • If any other tuning companies listed on the survey would like to have their information added to this post, please let me know.
