Default CS / CST for a 1997 F150

Hi,
I have a high mileage 1997 F150 2WD Automatic 4.6L with a 3.55 gear ratio that is pretty bone stock except the “gotts" intake mod and 20 inch rims and tires. It is far from tired, but the new 20’s cause a few too many down shifts uphill on the highway now, and I would like a bit more torque to compensate for the bigger dia tires.

I have some questions that I can’t seem to find answers for. The old Gryphon manual said my 1997 mechanical odometer - speedometer IP cannot be re-calibrated, but I don’t see that warning in the new manual for the CS / CST. A few other questions I can’t seem to find on your site:

•Can my 1997 mechanical odometer/speedometer be re-calibrated for larger tires?
•Can the new CS or CST tweak timing and fuel for your custom tunes on my 97?
•Will the gas mileage monitor gauge work on my 1997 without the digital odometer and associated hardware?
•The new manual does not show, but what gauge parameters are available for my 1997 F150 with the CS or CST? Is there a published list?
•There are stock, trans only, 87 & 93 tunes, but are trans performance upgrades included in the 87 and 93 stock performance tunes?

I have a feeling some of the cool functionality on the CS / CST will not be available for my 1997 F150. If some of the above functionality won’t be available, I will go with the Phoenix Switch. Any help understanding what I will wind up with would be appreciated.

Glen - It's my understanding that you will not gain greater functionality with the CS/CTS platform. You WILL gain some "bling" and, it is probably more reliable than the old Evolution for your model year since it doesn't have the OBDII cable with internal electronics.

You will have to correct your speedometer with a VSS gear change. This is not a "big deal", as I understand it.

We can change the timing for later trucks with the CS/CTS, but the only fuel change we have is the WOT fuel - it's the same as the old Evolution, so if neither of these options was available for you in the old platform, I would not look for them in the CS/CTS.

They've taken the "Average MPG" readout off the CS/CTS. My guess is, Edge got tired of hearing people complain about the inaccuracies. It still shows "Instant MPG". Everything else seems the same as the older Evolution.

Transmission improvements are included in the 87 tow and 93 octane canned tunes.

Hi Jack,

The feedback is much appreciated sir. I don’t have the old Gryphon, I only downloaded the manual. I did not buy because since the wheel size re-calibration didn’t work, I was itchy that some other things won’t work. I am not sure the CS or CTS will deliver full functionality on my old 97.

I ordered a couple different VSS gears from the dealer to try and I can pick them up tonight, but I still want to get a bit more torque.

To be clear, are you saying if I get the CS or CTS that the instantaneous MPG will work on my 1997 F150 as well as tweaking the timing? Also, can I assume the list of PID’s in the old Evolution/Gryphon manual will be available for the display gauges on the CS & CTS for my truck?

Thanks in advance for your patience and feedback. It is much appreciated.

Glen

Glen, I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to "back-pedal" a bit.

The plain simple fact is, I don't know much at all about the capabilities of pre-04 trucks, and that's what governs the "features" you have on a CS/CTS programmer (or the older Gryphon programmers, for that matter).

In conversing with another member, I found out last night that he did not have the Instant MPG readout on his CS. He has a 98, and with the CS plugged in, that readout simply reads "0", so the truck lacks the necessary sensor to make the readout work. Yours would be the same.

The CS/CTS DOES have a timing adjustment menu feature, but I have no way of knowing if it could be used on your truck either.

In short, I don't want to tell you something that may not be true, and, the CS/CTS manual is not going to help either.

I think you need to talk to Bill or, try to get a "Ford" person at Edge Tech support. Bill certainly knows what is supported and I would think the right people at Edge would know too. I'd ask exactly which PIDs are available to you.

You CAN download the CS/CTS manual from the Edge site. You want product# 85150 or 85250 on this page: Edge Products| Installation It says "Installation Instructions", but it's the User Manual (if you click on the "file" icon). If you click on the "i" icon, you get a "Quick Start Install Guide". I found that are a couple of minor changes between it and the one that was shipped with my unit, but the differences didn't seem important.

I'm sorry I can't be more informative than this, but I would not want you to be disappointed.

Hi Jack,

Wow, thanks so much for checking around with other members for me. That is way cool sir. What you found out kinda matched my intuition. I just had a hard time thinking my old truck would work with the new stuff.

The two main reasons for me to get the CS sounds like they are not available (Tire Swap & MPG). Looks like I’ll be going with the Phoenix chip.

Again, thanks for checking around. It saved me a lot of potential disappointment.

Glen

Happy to be of help, Glen.

Don't TOTALLY make up your mind until you talk to Bill or Corey (but I suspect Corey might have to ask for SOME of the answers from Bill). I know for certain they will not try to sell you something that would not give you what you want. In the past, they've even steered potential customers to other tuners, when it seemed they could not satisfy them completely.

So, anything they tell you, I think you can take to the bank.
