Gryphon™ CS and CTS Programmer Post here if you have a question or comment about the Gryphon CS (Color Screen) or CTS (Color Touch Screen) Programmer.

AFTER YOU DOWNLOAD YOUR CUSTOM TUNES, DO NOT PLUG YOUR PROGRAMMER BACK INTO FUSION, OR YOUR CUSTOM TUNES WILL BE ERASED!

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT IF YOU CONNECT TO FUSION FOR EDGE'S LATEST FIRMWARE UPDATE, YOU WILL ERASE YOUR CUSTOM TUNES!

Default Gryphon CS Update Q's

My shiny new Gryphon CS will be here in a few hours. I ordered a custom tune, but I know it will take several more weeks before I get it. I know that once I have custom tunes we should be waiting on Bill before we do any updates or else I can loose my custom tune.

My question is should I plug the unit into the computer before I get the tune to check for any updates (tonight)? Or will this still pose a problem once I get my custom tune from Bill?

I want to change the backround to something from Edge's website via the "MyStyle" program. This should hurt anything reguarding the custom tune should it?

Thanks,
Nick

Nick, as far as I can tell, you can update the firmware on your CS without problem since you don't have custom tunes. You'll have to establish a "Fusion account" first though and you do this after installing Fusion but BEFORE you plug in your device. You simply activate Fusion and it leads you through the steps.

As far as changing the background, I believe you can. I tried one of the Edge-supplied backgrounds, didn't like it and returned my unit to a plain black background. I'm sure the background image has to have certain properties and they may not be the same as the ones on PHP's website. (I simply have not checked into that).

I gotta tell you, the MyStyle program is not a particularly "helpful" or intuitive program. It took me quite a long time to figure out exactly what to click on to make the background change. And then, there is a line that appears on the CS/CTS screen that says "Don't disconnect", and it never goes away! Finally after about 10 minutes of seeing nothing happening and I was pretty sure the background HAD changed, I turned MyStyle off, without disconnecting my CTS. Then, my CTS immediately told me I could disconnect it.

I suspect one of us should write some instructions on how to use MyStyle!

Much appriciated!

I was hoping to use the American Flag backround. If I get to do it I may take some time and do a write up of how to do it. I guess if I don't like it I can always go back to a plain or stock backround with no harm? Like you did.

Sure, you can change backgrounds as often as you like. I found the "enhanced" background made the display to "cluttered" for my liking, so I dropped it. I'll be interested in seeing how other people react to this feature.

I've never had a programmer before, so I wouldn't know about the displays. I guess I will have to play with it to see what I like the best.

I know the pod can be painted right? Ddo most people use Krylon Fusion? Any thoughts?

The pod matches the silver grey that most newer Ford 150s have perfectly. If yours is a different color, like the "tan" that's used on some trucks Krylon Fusion would work fine.

I actually had an older style pod too, that was black and I painted it with Dupli-Color spray. The color didn't match, but I liked it better with my grey dash than I did when it was black. And, that paint adhered just fine. I think I probably wiped it down with 91% isopropyl alcohol before I painted it. You can get 91% in any drugstore, don't get 70% rubbing alcohol.

Your right the pod mathes almost exactly.

Am I correct in assuming that the install/hook-up is the same for the CS/CTS as the original gryphon?

Not quite, but it helps to read the manual.

It's actually easier. The vehicle ignition does not have to be ON. In fact, you are lead to believe it should be OFF when plugging in. When you do, the CS/CTS screen lights up and after a bit you are told to turn the ignition ON.

Installing a tune is pretty much the same if you don't have custom options.

In custom options, the Tire Size (TS) is now the tire diameter, in inches, to the nearest 10th of an inch. Bill's Gear Ratio calculator gives that figure and I would set the "squish" to "7". The WOT upshift and downshift point settings are missing and I have a call in to Edge about that. They're still researching this "problem". The Limit RPM setting may default to a very low number, around 5100, which would cause you to hit the rev limiter in a WOT acceleration maneuver. I set mine up to 5400.

I read the manual and there was a difference between that and the posted how to install gryphon, so that's why I asked. I didn't know if Bill's firmware change made a difference. Thanks for the info.

now about this "squish". I have read a lot of treads between here and other forums and never heard about it. My truck is (unfortunately) completely stock other than the DWV intake if you count that as an upgrade or mod. What does the "squish" do? Why should I set it at 7? Sorry if these are Noob questions

"Squish" is simply the scientific term Bill used to describe the "flattening" of the tread of the tire where it comes in contact with the road due to the truck's weight. It effectively reduces the diameter/circumference of your wheel and causes it to cover less distance in each revolution than it would if you just inflated it and "pushed it along the road", unmounted, like you might after having a flat fixed at a nearby service station. With extreme (100%) squish, what you have with a flat tire, your wheel's diameter is about the diameter of your rim.

My OEM tires 275/65R18s, have an unloaded diameter of 32.07 inches and they would rotate 629 times in one mile. When "squished" though, they act like they have a diameter of 31.1" (slightly less than a 7% rubber squish) and they rotate 650 times per mile. If the TS is not correct, the PCM will report an incorrect speed to your speedo and both it and the odometer will be telling lies.

There is a " Gear Ratio" calculator in Pegasus (you DON'T use Pegasus with a CS/CTS) that calculates the effect of squish for you.
