Question New Gryphon CS - question on tunes

I have an 06 F150 with an XCal2 and a custom tune from VMP for my intake. I noticed in one of my emails from Corey that it said they do not recommend running the high performance canned tunes on the CS once I receive it if you have an intake as it can make it run lean. My question is, can I continue to use the custom tune I have loaded already and use the Gryphon basically as a gauge pod until I get the custom tunes from Bill? The reason I ask is that a buddy of mine just got a Gryphon and he said he thought that one of the first things it did when he plugged it in was back up his PCM. I just want to make sure that it isn't going to mess anything up if I plug it in with a custom tune already loaded as long as I don't try to load another tune from the Gryphon.

Or, would I be better off returning to stock with the XCal2 and running one of the Gryphon canned tunes?

You can run the SCT tune you have and use the CS as a monitor. But you will have to return your truck to stock before installing the CS. Be sure to follow the instructions in the Sticky for the CS.

I haven't received the CS yet, hoping it will ship today and I will have it early next week, but just want to make sure I have the steps down so I can do it as soon as I get it.

1. Return truck to stock with XCal2
2. Install CS and let it initialize, do not install canned tune
3. Unplug CS and plug SCT tuner back in
4. Reload custom SCT tune
5. Unplug SCT and plug CS back in, do not install tunes

Once I receive the custom tunes I assume I would just need to unplug the CS, return to stock with the SCT and then load the custom CS tunes.

Anyone have a definitive answer on my steps above? Hope to have my CS within the next day or two.

I'm not 100% but I'd say that'll work. I think I saw someone else in the same boat doing the same thing. The important thing is to have the vehicle set to stock before plugging in the CS.

Poonjahb, that should work. I did something similar when I got my CTS and was waiting on my custom tunes for it.

I already had a Gryphon with custom tunes. I set my truck to stock and plugged in the CTS just to see if it would work. Then, I actually tuned my truck to the Level 2 canned tune on the CTS to see if that would work. It did.

I set the truck back to stock with the CTS, then plugged the old Gryphon back in and loaded the custom tune I wanted to use. I verified the truck worked and disconnected the Gryphon.

I reconnected the CTS without loading any tune, but I DID set up my display the way I wanted. Now, the CTS reported I was at Level 0 (stock), but I was actually on my Level 1 custom tune. I drove the truck with the CTS installed and played with various display options till I found what I liked. The CTS was only acting as a "monitor" during this time. Things like Tire Size had been set with my old Gryphon, not with the CTS.

When Bill told me he had loaded my custom tunes on the Fusion server, I took the CTS off the truck and installed them into that unit.

I reconnected my old Gryphon to the truck and set it back to stock.

Then, I connected the CTS and loaded the custom tune into the truck that I wanted to use with it. I've not used the old Gryphon since, but if I did, I would have to set my truck's tune back to stock with the CTS before plugging in the Gryphon, assuming I wanted to use the Gryphon as a programmer and not just a monitor.

Hope what I've said here makes sense. What you posted was absolutely correct, but I wanted to rephrase it for anyone else wanting to try something similar. In 20 years of teaching, I've found you have to say the same thing over again in different ways to reach the widest audience.

Thanks Jack. Now I just have to wait for it to show up so I can start playing.
