Question COMPARISON....

i already have a SCT-LIVEWIRE and was wandering how the GRYPHON CS/CTS compares to the SCT?

i am on a waiting list for FICM remote reprogram and ECM/TCM rollback and have talked to Corey about some custom tuning afterwards. so before i spend the money on 3 custom tunes for my SCT, was just wondering what the GRYPHON will do(mainly if it tunes the transmission)?

either which way, i hope Bill will be able to write me some awsome tunes....

thanks for your time....

Since you have a 2004 truck, the Gryphon (either the original monochrome version or the newer CS/CTS platforms) WILL tune the transmission. In fact, the canned tunes for these three start out at Level 1 - Transmission only.

Bill writes the tunes for either the SCT platform or the Gryphon platform and I doubt there's much difference between the "results" using either one. Mainly, with a Gryphon, you get gauges, and I wanted that feature to monitor some extra powertrain parameters since I tow.

But, I just noticed you were talking about the Livewire! So, it has the gauge feature too. And, I know Bill tunes the SCT X3, but I don't know about the Livewire.

Sorry, my reply is "rambling", but I'm leaving it this way because others ask about the Gryphon vs the X3.

You'll have to study the owners manuals for the CS/CTS and the Livewire to see if there's any significant "feature" difference. If a different tuner, like Justin, tunes the Livewire, you can assume there WILL be some differences between his tunes and Bill's. But, since I've never had a tune from Justin or Troyer, I cannot talk about what those differences might be.

If you already have a Livewire and it will support tunes for your vehicle, I'd certainly recommend you stay with it rather than convert to a CS/CTS. I doubt changing the platform would be justified in the additional cost.

thanks for the quick response. probaly for now will stay with the SCT(with 3 custom tunes), mainly for financal reason`s(with 6 children and Christmas coming)........

anyway, wasn`t aware there would be a difference in custom tuning between a sct x3 or sct-livewire....

I don't know if there is, in the final outcome (how it effects your truck). And, I just looked at PHP's "Products" page and Bill does indeed write tunes for the Livewire, so you're covered there. (I was just being lazy before and didn't bother to check.)

Here's the deal with programming though, as I see it. Bill MAY have some different points to make, but I think what I'm telling you is correct.

First, if Bill sets out to write a tune, he has a "goal" or "desired outcome" in mind. So, his tune has to contain code that will achieve that outcome. Now, each PCM that starts with a different "base program" (what the hex code identifies) has to receive different instructions to be brought to the "desired outcome final state". So, you can see that your truck would need a completely different tune than mine even though we might both want exactly the same results! The only time your tune would match mine is if we had PCMs with identical hex codes, and, we were operating both trucks in the same environment (which means you'd have to move to Tucson - which is unlike most everywhere else in the World).

Now extend that thought to a different programming device. Each one acts in a unique way to modify the parameters in a PCM. Some programmers may adjust variables that other programmers leave alone, and, different programmers have their own procedure to transfer the tune to a PCM. One thing I learned fairly recently is that the X3 burns the tune into the PCM slower than the CS/CTS. There are other differences of course.

What this means though is that a tune written for you for the Livewere is not going to work on a CS/CTS, even though it's for the same truck. And, it's not just a matter of "renaming the tune" so it is recognized by each programmer. The tunes have to actually be prepared differently from scratch.

I suspect there are differences between a tune for the X3 and Livewire too, although those differences might be minor, just as the differences between a tune written for the older Gryphon and a CS/CTS probably have slight differences.
