Default Low boost reading with 7.3 and PHP tuned CS

Ok, had this issue since I got programmer. Truck is a 95, 5 speed. I only read 17lbs of boost. Even with stock truck and Edge's stock tunes it only read 17.

- I added stage 1 injectors and PHP tunes....still 17
- Fixed leaking manifold, up-pipes and installed D66 turbo...still 17 max
- Intercooler...17
- Terminator TE500 HPOP and E-fuel, still only reads 17. And now I am convinced its the programmer because turbo makes alot more noise with recent mods and boost comes in quickers but only read 17 lbs.
- Changed where boost tube source is, I moved tube to intercooler pipe right after turbo outlet.

Edge is right down the road, they say try another MAP sensor, but at $130 a pop I need some help with how they work.

Ive heard the OBS' MAP sensor is only able to read up to 17 lbs. If the MAP will only support the 17 lbs, then the CS is worthless

Also, do the PHP tunes bypass the stock defueling at 22 lbs? If stock programming defuels at 22 psi then how are all these people with OBS truck and less mods than I got run upwards of 30 lbs of boost?

I could really use some help on this, I have tried emailing PHP numerous times with no reply. Getting really frustrated and need to decide what to try next.

Ok, little update. Took truck out with CS reading EGT, boost and MAP. Note, with truck sitting there and boost tube disconnected from MAP sensor it reads 13, which is atmospheric.

With PHP's 65 hp tow tune on a long 5th gear pull max boost psi was 21 and max MAP was 40. So, The MAP read 27lbs of boost was boost reading only 21.

It's not that the CS is worthless (as boost readings usually are anyway), but that the factory MAP sensor is only able to recognize that much boost.

Instead of blaming Edge, blame Ford for using a sensor unable to recognize more boost.

People put way too much stock in seeing a high boost number.

I agree, but if "boost" readings are different than "MAP pressure" then I doubt it is the MAP sensor.

I am not putting too much stock into boost reading. I am trying to figure out if I have a problem that is preventing truck from building boost. Towing in the mountains the thing won't build boost and gets hot on the EGT side.

- I still can't figure out how this MAP sensor ties in with custome tunes. If tunes are built for my bigger stick and boost inevitably will go up, but a stock MAP sensor cant handle it. So how does a custom tunes CS add fuel according to boost numbers? My truck is a smoky SOB until 2300 rpm.

On another note, I was so angry at the CS today I didnt even mess with it. For the past 2 weeks everytime I program it to the 65 hp tow tune and get into it in the morning it gives me the pop-up that I have to plug into Fusion or re-enter my VIN manually and go through the debacle of rebooting. If I leave it in 40 hp tow tune it is fine. I have about had it with this thing.

The MAP sensor is just that, an ABSOLUTE pressure sensor. It's going to read atmospheric pressure plus whatever additional pressure is supplied by the turbocharger. The "boost" pressure is a value CALCULATED from the MAP sensor and barometric pressure sensors inside the CS itself.

So how does a custom tunes CS add fuel according to boost numbers? The way these trucks are set up, the truck considers itself at "full boost" at around 12 PSI. Anything above that, and you're going to get full-fueling depending on a couple other tuning maps and RPM.

Thanks for answers.

If my calculated "boost" reading is 7 lbs off I consider that pretty substancial. With my mods what do you consider a normal boost number? I am at higher elevation and intercooled which affects air volume a little.

Aweome, thanks for the explaination. Three more questions.

1. Why everytime do I go out to truck in morning after leaving it in level 2 does it need to go through the WHOLE reboot process? This is aggrevating the (*&^% out of me.

2. Will I benefit from updated tunes. Ive added D66 turbo, regulated return electric fuel system and T500 HPOP?

3. The new high idle thing sounds great, I need that. Is the new update worth getting?

1. Why everytime do I go out to truck in morning after leaving it in level 2 does it need to go through the WHOLE reboot process? This is aggrevating the (*&^% out of me. I don't know. I use chips on the 7.3L trucks for a reason. I don't do anything with the programmers at all and have no idea how they function.

2. Will I benefit from updated tunes. Ive added D66 turbo, regulated return electric fuel system and T500 HPOP? Updated tunes? Those don't exist. The only thing that may cause a little grief (and it will only be at idle) would be the higher flow rate of the aftermarket high pressure oil pump. If you're still running tuning for a stock high pressure oil pump, it's possible to run into a "rolling idle" of 50 or so RPM at intervals of every 4-5 seconds.

3. The new high idle thing sounds great, I need that. Is the new update worth getting?
What new high idle thing? The automatic high idle? That's not possible on a 95-97 truck.

-So, MAP and boost readings are different and its the sensors fault

- I can't get the automatic high idle function

- I have to reboot the thing every morning if I leave it on level 2, and this is the response I get..." I don't know. I use chips on the 7.3L trucks for a reason. I don't do anything with the programmers at all and have no idea how they function."

- When I ordered chip I had stage 1s, intercooler, down pipe and exhaust. I've since added HPOP, turbo, Efuel, would different custom tunes benefit me with the recent mods.

Here is my consensus. Since I've been emailing and posting here with absolutely no solution for 6 months. I will try to call PHP tomorrow, If no resolve I will be orderering custom 6 pos chip and guage from another vendor. I essentially have a $500 dollar piece of equipment that doesnt accurately read vital signs, have the same capabilities of a chip, and constantly needs a 10 minute reboot if I use 1 of the 2 tunes I ordered.

- I can't get the automatic high idle function Blame Ford for not making the computer smart enough to do it, not us. There is NOTHING that can be done for an automatic high idle on a 95-97 truck regardless of who "tunes" it. That function DOES NOT EXIST.

They've never been something that I've been familiar with because I have no use for one nor do I have any technical knowledge of how Edge has them configured.

- When I ordered chip I had stage 1s, intercooler, down pipe and exhaust. I've since added HPOP, turbo, Efuel, would different custom tunes benefit me with the recent mods. Nothing in the tuning is going to be changed for any of those "mods" except the high pressure oil pump...and the truck isn't going to run stronger because of the tuning for the pump. It's a function of what the computer expects to base injection pressure regulator valve position to be to maintain a desired pressure. By tuning "for" the pump, it will only make the initial base map less aggressive because the computer will ALWAYS use the injection control pressure sensor as a feedback (similar to oxygen sensor function on a gasoline vehicle) to adjust for actual vs. desired pressure.

Here is my consensus. Since I've been emailing and posting here with absolutely no solution for 6 months. I will try to call PHP tomorrow, If no resolve I will be orderering custom 6 pos chip and guage from another vendor. I will say right now that you likely won't get a response on the phone unless you get really lucky with call timing. Bill is manning the office himself and taking all phone calls...if he's on the phone at the moment it will ring and ring (sometimes the auto-attendant picks up).
There is nothing the programmer can't do that anybody else can do on a chip short of switching instantaneously between different tune files. That's the drawback to running a programmer on ANY vehicle....and if you've ever programmed a newer Dodge truck, you'd think that your Ford wasn't so bad. As for why your programmer has the issue of needing to "reboot" on level two every day, that's something that could be as easy as a reload of the custom files if something got corrupted during the last download. However, don't just connect to Fusion for the heck of it because your custom tunes will be gone until they are reloaded (although the truck would run fine on standard tunes....just a little short on power).
