Default WOOT!

Just got back from my LIVE tuning session and had a few questions and comments.

First off I got so many little nagging things taken care of. The ICP and PW maps took the biggest hit as I made quite a few changes in there. Interesting how big of a change the PW map can make to drive-ability and ICP. I was also able to get the shifting about perfect, but I will know for sure after a few days of driving if anymore changes need to be made.

I was thinking of loading an experimental ICP map into the emulator but before I made the change I realized I am working with a limited reach (less stuff to monkey with), which brought up a question.

What happens (or can it) if I load a file with a different Normalizer into the emulator that is using stock ones (PCM)? Hmm.... not sure if that makes sense.

How stable is the Emulator, can its "updating" cause issues even when changes are not made?

Reason I ask is because when I was playing with the ICP and IPR% the idle would be silky smooth for close to a minute then all off a sudden run a little rough (normal) for a while then smooth back out again. I tried to watch the PID's to see if I could catch what was going on with no real success. Either way I was able to find the sweet spot for those injectors.

And what is it that causes a choppy idle for a few seconds after first start on a warm engine?

It starts perfect when cold, choppy when warm. I tried dropping the ICP map down in the low RPM/ high MFD ranges with seemingly little effect. Maybe ICP during crank function?

Thanks.

Ohh... not sure if this is the right section, but looked like it could work.

Dave,

I've learned a lot since I first began messing with the emulator (2600 miles worth of live tuning in 4 days will do that to a guy).

Just about everything you have access to in the definitions is change-able while using the emulator....functions and normalizers as well. So you can change normalizers while tuning or during program changes....it will accept the normalizer change.

As far as stability goes, I have driven both of my trucks off of the emulator for weeks (not even plugged into my laptop) without any issues. Basically, the board that plugs into the PCM is the same board that Bill and Corey used to make and market under their Diesel Power brand for their 1 and 2 position chips back in the day.

The only time I ran into a choppy idle while warm was after raising the IPR map and the IPR didn't drop fast enough after a start. If you look in the functions menu, there is a "Cranking Mass Fuel Desired" table. Try lowering that in the hot ranges from 45 to 30 and see what happens. You are treading in water that I don't have any experience in yet so the best advice I can offer is to give it a shot. There is also an "ICP Desired During Crank" function that may be able to help you out on that.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Cool, thanks for the advise. I hope to hit this thing heavy this weekend and get my Daily and Tow programs ironed out.

Boy, that PW map is tricky! Minor changes can spur all sorts of negative side affects. I dropped PW slightly in a few areas, now ICP is too high giving me a jerky pedal and inoperative cruise control (jerky too), not to mention the messed up shift points because of the higher APP.

FUN!
