Default cummins 5.9 in "97 GMC TopKick 5500

Just wanted to tell Power Hungry world that I pulled the 3116 Cat and 5speed tranny out my Topkick. I am putting a cummins 5.9 and RTO9513, thats a Roadranger, Twin counter shaft, Overdrive, 900 ft-lb tourque, 5, 13speed.

The 5.9 is a reman by Todd Ely of PDS Deisel, It was originaly built to be a street/sled puller but the guy ended looseing his job so I scored it for a trade.

It has Oring head gaskest, APR head studs, APR lower end studs, performace pistons, marine injectors, It was set up for twins but, it's getting a S400 turbo and were not quite sure what to run for housing and compressor yet but we will experiment, the pump is a little to wild (like 625 hp on engine dyno) we will put a different pump on since this truck with gross out as 38,000-45,000# 2-3 a week.

I am plannig on being able to run 75mph empty and get like 10-12 mpg with the OD and 3.36 gears. The 13 spd will be sweet for keeping the engine in the fuel sipping sweet spot most of the time.

This was the easiest engine/tranny pull yet, thanks to a one peice fiberglass nose.

Why the 5.9L? Instead of the 8.3L? Got tired of the 3116 huh? Not one of my favorite engines either, I'll add the 3126 and a C7 to that list aswell.

Cool swap....keep us posted.

i am using the 5.9 because it was avalible, a guy need to unload it, and I was able to trade him a 24' flatbed trailer, that I can still use any time. If I could have got an 8.3, I would have, there plenty of room for it. My Brother runs 3 Dodge cummins 12valves and they pull realy well.

the 5.9 lighter then 8.3 and I belive there is a lot more after market for the 5.9. The 3116 is freakin heavy my little (36 hp) farm tractor had a hard time picking it up, I was told it weights like 1800-2000 # and the cummins is about 1000 #.

As long as the race engine you're putting in it has enough compression to start without ether, it should be a running mofo.

good point about the compression, I didn't even think about that. I want to be able to start it in the winter too.

I like them. They have kept food on the table.

My dad's work truck has a cummins and he loves it almost as much as his '97 PSD. I think it's one size bigger than the regular engines they put in the regular trucks, but I'm not sure. He says that engine beats his older work truck (ford 6.0) any day, especially on a cold one.

That 5.9 ought to that TK into a completly different monster. And the low rev power curve will really like the 13 over/3.36 combo. Plus it shouldn't work you to death going through the gears.

I had a similar thought with a old B61 single screw. But I was thinking about a 9 spd.

Let us know how it turns out to run. I might have to reconsider the Mack project.
