Default COMDLG32.OCX and/or MSCOMM32.OCX issues...

After about 90 minutes on the phone with a very nice (and very patient) customer trying to resolve an installation issue, we stumbled across a resolution to a long standing problem with Windows Vista/7 and 3 of the Windows Controls that are used by Pegasus and other 32 bit Windows applications.

After completing the installation and trying to run the Pegasus software, you may be greeted with an error message similar to this one:

The solution is to register and then re-register the Windows Control. In order to do so, use the following procedures:

For an error with COMDLG32.OCX

To Uninstall - Locate and hold down the [Windows] key ( - usually located in the lower left corner of the keyboard) and then press the [R] key once. This will open a "Run" dialog. In the "Open" box, type in the following line...

Code:
regsvr32 /u C:\windows\system32\comdlg32.ocx
... Hold down the [Ctrl] + [Shift] keys and press [Enter] or click [OK]. (This allows the command line to be run as "Administrator".) You should see a dialog window to confirm removal was successful:

To Reinstall - Locate and hold down the [Windows] key ( - usually located in the lower left corner of the keyboard) and then press the [R] key once. This will open a "Run" dialog. In the "Open" box, type in the following line...

Code:
regsvr32 C:\windows\system32\comdlg32.ocx
... Hold down the [Ctrl] + [Shift] keys and press [Enter] or click [OK]. (This allows the command line to be run as "Administrator".) You should see a dialog window to confirm installation was successful:

For an error with MSCOMM32.OCX

To Uninstall - Locate and hold down the [Windows] key ( - usually located in the lower left corner of the keyboard) and then press the [R] key once. This will open a "Run" dialog. In the "Open" box, type in the following line...

Code:
regsvr32 /u C:\windows\system32\mscomm32.ocx

Code:
regsvr32 C:\windows\system32\mscomm32.ocx
... Hold down the [Ctrl] + [Shift] keys and press [Enter] or click [OK]. (This allows the command line to be run as "Administrator".) You should see a dialog window to confirm installation was successful:

For an error with MSCOMCTL.OCX

To Uninstall - Locate and hold down the [Windows] key ( - usually located in the lower left corner of the keyboard) and then press the [R] key once. This will open a "Run" dialog. In the "Open" box, type in the following line...

Code:
regsvr32 /u C:\windows\system32\mscomctl.ocx

If you have any further issues at this point, please contact Power Hungry for further assistance. Please be aware that in order to be able to quickly resolve further issues, it may be necessary to initiate a Remote Desktop Support Session. This means that we will be able to access your computer as if we were sitting at your keyboard. You will be able to see everything we are doing and you still have control over the mouse and keyboard. If at any time you are concerned about our actions while connected, you can immediately cancel the session. We respect everyone's right to privacy and understand that some persons may object to allowing us direct access to their computer. However, if you have an objection to a remote desktop session, then we may not be able to completely identify and resolve the problem.

UPDATED: 03/18/2011

This article has been update to include the "Run as Administrator" feature to help bypass the problems associated with Windows Vista and Windows 7 security during the execution of security sensitive applications.

Take care.
