She finally had enough
and let go of a rod........... on my way home for lunch today. What a horrible noise! Sucks because I was accelerating VERY slowly and had just up-shifted into second gear and bang.
I will be filling out the survey after the teardown to determine what actually failed. |
Sorry to hear about that!
Find any block windows? |
ohh yeaa.........either #1 or #2 rod broke and took out both sides of the block:cry-blow:
|
DAMN IT!!
That really sucks Dave. Hey, I'll email you some stuff when I get a chance. I'm not "batchin' " it tonight (wife's been gone 2 nights) so I may not get right to it. If'n you need something let me know. I have some spare parts. |
Oooowieee!
Short block time and beef it up! That is if other internal parts didn't get wacked too! |
Well if I am gonna rebuild it it will get all the goodies, I am not gonna have this happen again. Just might take awhile to get the funds, and probably going to have to sell some stuff.:cursin:
Might have to be a quitter and get someting else. |
I want to thank Bill for his call regarding my engine! It was 2:30 AM his time and he offered to analyze my current and not so current programming.
All I can say is WOW , you guys rock! I am so glad people like Bill, Corey, and Cody still exist in the world today, people who are willing to help out strangers without thinking twice.......my hats off to you. Now get some sleep:D |
Well that sucks, hope you get it built back much stronger :2thumbs:
|
Well the good news is that tuning doesn't seem to have contributed to the failure. Don't know what exactly failed yet, but makes me feel better knowing it wasn't the programing.
Thank you Bill for helping out, and for all your cool computer programs! |
Got the new block ready to go to the machine shop to get boiled and magged.........hopefully its OK.
http://i619.photobucket.com/albums/t...s/IMG_4368.jpg Any one know what to look for when checking block casting for cavitation around the main webbing? I got lots of pic's. |
Hope it all works out for yah. Sounds exactly what mine did its a pretty disconcerning noise
|
Got her in the shop tonight to warm up, and will be pulling the engine tomorrow.
Here's a few pic's......... http://i619.photobucket.com/albums/t...9/IMG_4385.jpg http://i619.photobucket.com/albums/t...9/IMG_4379.jpg http://i619.photobucket.com/albums/t...9/IMG_4374.jpg After looking through the hole in the block it looks like the #2 rod broke right below the wrist pin, and is still strait and bolted to the crank....... |
Keep the pix coming!
You may have to hire a photographer so you don't get your camera dirty! J/K!!! LOL's |
Should be some carnage pic's tomorrow...........:(
|
|
And here the carnage...........
http://i619.photobucket.com/albums/t...9/IMG_4398.jpg http://i619.photobucket.com/albums/t...9/IMG_4402.jpg http://i619.photobucket.com/albums/t...9/IMG_4409.jpg :cry-blow::cry-blow: :cry-blow: |
And the piston.................
http://i619.photobucket.com/albums/t...9/IMG_4412.jpg Pretty nice spray pattern thought................ http://i619.photobucket.com/albums/t...9/IMG_4413.jpg |
|
After analyzing the rod, it appears it had cracked, and kept cracking until the last 1/8 inch , then broke completely. You can see it in the piston pic's.
hmmm........... |
You're right about the spray pattern.
Again, if you need any parts, I have quite a few (front cover, oil pan, pickup, etc.) |
Thanks Cody! I will let you know if I need anything.:thumbs up yellow:
|
Good news, my block came back from the machine shop with a clean bill of health. No cracks, and will need to be bored .030 and will need one sleeve. So I will be filling the block next week, then sending it back to the machine shop for them to finish up when the rest of my parts show up.
|
I take it the rods must be powder metal (did I say that right?).
I blew a 7.3 a few years ago, it had over 600,000 miles on it. Well realy starting fluid did, it a cracked a piston. I rebuilt a 2001 7.3 last year every thing new from turbo to oil pan and I have it sitting in storage in case one of my 7.3 lets go. |
Nope, they were forged rods that I polished, and had the machine shop magnaflux, shot peen, and heat treat.
I think they must have had a hard life in their previous engine. |
