Stumble/Miss/Hesitation
Has anyone experienced a stumble/miss/hesitation with their Gryphon. Occasionally, I can just be driving down the road and get a terrible feeling. Its like I have a coil pack out or something. There is no rhyme or reason as to what sets it off, it just does it and the only thing that fixes it is pulling over and turning the truck off and restarting. :cursin:
I tried setting the truck back to stock and ran it that way for several weeks and everything was fine. This usually happens at least once a week with the programmer on the truck. Any ideas?!?! 2006 5.4 |
No ideas at all, but the fact that it runs fine at stock makes me suspect the tune, as I'm sure you do. I think Bill is going to have to be the one to fix this.
- Jack |
I thought I had heard of someones acting similar before but could not find the post. Maybe it was the torque converter "shuttering" that I am thinking of. I am not sure if it is the same thing or not. It really feels like a coil pack is unplugged. I have tried to contact PHP by phone several times regarding the issue but have not had any luck. Hopefully Bill will see this post.... Bill??
|
There have been some cases of part throttle suddering of the torque convertor engaugement while going back up a hill after coming down from one.
Mine was from using coast button on the cruise control. How many miles on the truck? |
69,xxx
It seems like it may always start with a coast and part throttle type driving. It did it again today and I let off the gas and got back in it and it went away. I was kind of excluding the torque converter as before even making it downshift would not make it go away. Only turning the truck on and then back off would. Keep the ideas coming..... Can a mod point Bill to this thread? |

I know they are busy but any idea the best way to get a hold of them?
|
Yes they are awfully busy!!!!!!
Try and call them and not just once or twice. Try a lot. Or fax them a note. |
Still no luck!
|
Phones are closed this week.
Try to fax pm email. I don't know what else to do? I've posted a note on the moderator's board. Peace!:) |
Allyn,
What's the best number to reach you at? |
edit: I added my cell to my user cp
Thanks! |
Thanks! Will hit you back this afternoon after UPS picks up and stuff.

I moved your post here: http://forum.gopowerhungry.com/calib...l-shudder.html Peace!:) |
Did someone try and call and I missed it? Do not think I received one.
|
Allyn,
I got tied up and didn't get a chance to get back with you. Is any time this afternoon good, or would tomorrow be better? Thanks. |
You can call me anytime. My phone is always on.
|
TTT
I am more and more convinced that it is the torque converter symptoms that I have read about. |
rough idle
I think one of the previous posts was from me. About once a month my truck acts like it isn't firing on a cylinder, rough idle and when in gear shudders. My solution too is to pull over, turn off the truck, then turn it back on and wait another month. It also seems at times that when driving slow the transmission can't decide between first and second and acts like it slips, but these are minor issues and I can live with it, but if there is a solution I'm all ears. 2008 F150 Lariet, 5.4 4X4
|
Sound very similar.
Over 3 weeks and have not heard a word other than what you read in this post. :thumbsdwn: |
Sorry to hear Stang. They are just very hard to get ahold of. I have seen Corey on the past 2 days, I am sure she will notify Bill about it as soon as she sees this.
|
I'll post another note.
Peace!:) |
^^ Thanks!
I understand that they are busy and I understand small business pains. (I own a small business myself) I do not want to tell anyone how they should run their business, but one thing is for sure, the things that I have experienced as well as read here and elsewhere would typically not last long. I hope I am wrong in PHP's case as they offer a great product at a reasonable price. Other than actually receiving my Gryphon and being able to run it on the truck, I have experienced several problems (mainly communication) and being told something was going to happen at a certain time that did not come through. Not trying to talk down towards PHP or rant, just somewhat frustrating. |
TTT-- It did it twice today in one short trip. Still cant get a hold of PHP.
|
Still nothing..... I see they have a intern now, anyone know if I should try contacting him?
|
secstang03,
Bill has put updated calibrations on his server for you. I don't see where you have downloaded the new calibrations. Bill said that he emailed you about 2 weeks ago about the new files, so you might want to check. When he rebuilds the files, the calibration date doesn't change so it appears that they haven't been updated. Give that a shot. Thank you for your patience. |
I do not recall receiving such email and have checked my spam as well. Either way, THANK YOU! I will try and update tomorrow.
|
Has this issue been resolved? A different tune was/is written?

I have the Gryphon out of the truck.
Do I just plug it in and go to update, targeted functions? |
Quote:
Then, start Pegasus. Click on [Updates]->{Pegasus Update Manager] to make sure you are running the latest version of Pegasus! Connect your Gryphon to your PC, when Pegasus reports that it is "connected", click on [Updates]->[Custom File Download] to upload the new tunes to your Gryphon. When the process finishes, disconnect the Gryphon from your PC, turn your truck's ignition to ON and reconnect your Gryphon. Then, you should be able to reprogram your truck. - Jack |
^^ Thank you!
Got it updated. I will report back on the fix. |
You're most welcome. I hope everything works now.
- Jack |
I've experienced the same thing on my truck with the Gryphon. Does it on both the 87 & 93 octane performance tunes. Doesn't do it on the stock tune. Looking forward to seeing if yours got fixed.
-Mark |
Mine too
I havent used any other tune on my truck but LV3/93 oct. I do not have any other tunes and the only thing my 2008 SCrew 5.4 has is a flowaster 50 Cat Back single side exhaust. EVERYTIME I drive it sounds like I am misfiring, or its not getting enough gas/bad gas. My truck only has 8000 miles on it. Most of the time driving around my town I am under 35mph. I live on Long Island less than 100ft above sea level and rarely have I gone more than 200 feet above sea level. The only time the sputtering stops is when i am getting on it (1/2 throttle or more) or when i really get on it WOT on the highway.
Sometimes I use the throttle position gauge and the majority of the sputtering happens under 15% and at slower speeds. When in stock mode there is a delay in throttle response under 15% so its lose lose - damned if i do damned if i dont. The sputtering doesnt really bother me but the fact that it happens enough that my wife notices it begs me to ask the question/or suggest they have/will a fix for it? |

Or a custom tune? You need to update your user cp too! With your hex code and programmer serial number. |
Quote:
|
Yes if you could put your hex and serial # in your user cp it would be much appreciated!:)
Also at what rpm is your miss happening at? Is it more previlant at the begining of a shift?(High rpms) or after the shift?(Low rpms) Also how many miles on the truck? Peace!:) |
Its always below 1500, light touch on the pedal to accl away from a stop sign or traffic. I almost feel like its starving for gas or flooding - kinda like the bog you get on a dirtbike thats carb isnt floating right. No issue with shifting - I love what this thing has done to my shifts - honestly besides the great burnouts-quick accel, shifting is my ABSOLUTE Favorite thing about this mod!!!
|
Hex is in - all updates done - guess I didnt realize I had it set up already - no change in status from above messages.
|
rough idle and accel.
Hey yall just wanted to see the outcome of this. I had heard about it before on other posts and have been experiencing the same issue with mine when im on 91 perf. I dont get it in stock or 87 perf. 06 fx4 5.4, 70xxx thanks in advance for the help!

Yes sir!:thumbs up yellow: Any update or idea on what could be the issue? |
Hey All, this is still an issue for me. Ive run a couple tanks of gas (93 octane of course) at various speeds and drive times and its still pretty bad - I figured it would eventually work it out - Wednesday morning while stuck in traffic on the long island expressway the sputtering actually had my truck bucking while i was just touching the gas, it felt almost as if my truck was a stick and i wasnt giving it enough gas. I am also noticing that from a rolling start (under 25 mph) the sputtering occurs on light acceleration up to almost 2200 RPMS. I cant drive my truck stock anymore so if anyone knows what the problem could be please keep me posted!
Thanks so much! Side note: My buddy suggested that it could be the transmission settings on the canned tune - he said something like maybe its too much pump pressure at a low idle? Does that make sense to anyone? |
LongIslandSCREW,
I'll post a note on the moderators board for Bill to look at this. Thanx for completely the info in your user cp. I and PHP appreciate it. Peace!:) |
Pete,
I have an updated file for you to download. There is a small change to the Open Loop transition that should help eliminate any tip-in stumble. Mark, I will have to take a closer look at the canned tunes for you calibration and see what I can come up on that. I am going to assume that the symptoms and cause are similarly caused by an Open Loop transition problem. I don't think these issues are caused by line pressure problems because we add little, if any, pressure at light throttle and all pressures are progressively controlled by throttle position and load. The more throttle and load, the more pressure is applied to the clutches. Keep me posted. |
Thanks 88 and thanks Bill - I appreciate it! I cant go back to stock HA HA HA HA HA !!!
Bill, I am home most of the time - work out of my house. If you have seen this issue enough and would like (and its possible) I could always hook my laptop up to the programmer and take a drive while you watch and try to diagnose. I have a verizon wireless card in my laptop so mobile isnt an issue. Rarely do i opt to drive slow so its an issue but its really not. Problem is where I live - there is always traffic!!!!:D |
I have been experiencing the shuddering aswell. It feels like the truck is misfiring and if I turn the engine off and restart it the problem goes away. I'm going to plug my gryphon into pegasus tonight since it's been awhile and see if there are any updates.

Bill I am experiencing the exact same problems do you believe the updated file would fix it? |

Are you using canned or custom tunes? |

These would be targeted file updates for those other customers and wouldn't be applicable for your use. I'll post a note for Cody so Bill will look at it. |
I put hard copies of the concerns on Bill's desk. He was awake all night and is still walking around now so I would expect him to look at this stuff mid-afternoon.
|
He is still aware of it. He hasn't gotten the issue resolved yet.

Not yet????????????
I'll post another note............ Since you're already waiting try to call PHP also maybe that will light a fire. |
I feel sorry for anyone who has paid such good money for a faulty product, and then there is no support behind it. You would think that if there is too much workload going on, new hires would be brought in to close this gap.
Normally, I would keep my mouth shut on this type of isse b/c I haven't experienced any problems myself.....until now. Yesterday, I pulled up to a stoplight and all of a sudden it felt like my truck was sputtering...almost like it was not getting enough fuel or something. I started to drive it and it continued for a mile or 2...then stopped on its own. It felt VERY unhealthy for the truck. The issue did not repeat itself throughout the rest of the day. I haven't driven it yet today. My plan is to see if it starts to become a recurring issue. If so, I may make an attempt to get it fixed but I might just set it back on my tow tune and let it be. I'm not being bitter at all here...I'm speaking as a guy who sells services to the federal government where customer service is EVERYTHING. Without it, our business cannot sustain or grow. I truly hope PHP can get over their "busy" issues and close this gap for those of us that are having problems b/c word of mouth goes a long way. |
It seems you have the same issue I do aswell.

Well at least I'm not the only one having this issue. Mine only happens on the tow tune. So far I haven't had a problem with the Transmission only tune. I tried 93 performance tune for a couple of weeks and didn't have a problem with that either, although I was concerned about the higher operating temps accross the board but have since learned they were still within normal operating range. I think eventually there will be enough notice by people experiencing this issue that our problem will be evaluated and fixed. I wonder if everyone's HEX Code has a similiarity that would narrow down the problem? I have accepted the problem of the rough running since its not a frequent issue and just don't push it hard when it occurrs. just pull over, turn off the engine and then starting it back up usually remidies the problem until next event. I have never experienced the issue while on the highway driving freeway speeds it is usually below 40MPH in the city. Although there is this little issue, I am still happy with my Gryphon. :fyi:
|
I thought I was alone with this issue, until I found this thread today. I've had this same problem for about a month now it's happened four times. The last time was today pulling up to a red light, the truck starts shaking and spudder like it's running out of gas. Hitting the gas peddle doesn't help, turn the truck off and restart and all is fine. So far this has only happened with my custom performance tune. If I use my stock tune the truck runs great. I also have a custom tow tune but only use it when pulling my boat and have had no problems with it yet. I hope we can figure this out, I love my Gryphon. 06 Lariat 5.4 43,000.

Oh...ironically, I also have a 2006 Lariat 5.4 w/ 43k |
Or you guys have the same truck but completely split personalities.

My service ticket is in :thumbs up yellow:
For those of you having this problem, I highly recommend submitting a service ticket in order to assist PHP with tracking issues and general recordkeeping. I would NOT depend on this forum alone as a resource for technical support. We should be exercising due diligence in following the right procedures. Good luck to you all. :cheesy smile: |
And just how do you find the support link address?
It's in my Sig... |
Just sent in a ticket.
|
I got a gryphon in early sept and have the EXACT same issue. i thought it was coincidence, but it only does it on SETTING 2 / 87 economy tow. Drivability is crap. I had to turn it to setting 1 'tow only' or 'shift only' or whatever its called.
at this point it looks like this is a known issue with the canned #2 tune, not a couple coincidences. Good thing I found this, I was just about to start throwing parts like coilpacks at it to solve the issue. I guess its time for a ticket for me then. btw...2006 fx4. is it just me or is this a lot of 06 models? Matt |
Me too!!
I think I may have this same problem as well. Mine is not that frequent. Maybe once a month. But it will run rough just like it is missing and then all of a sudden clear up. I have the 87 performance tune on an 2007 5.4 about 61,000 miles. I guess I will put in a ticket as well.
|
Stumble/Miss/Hesitation
I too have the same problem and have taken some videos of different PID's when it's happening with my iPhone. I will post them and start a ticket to. I know you guys are busy Corey, I had sent a email on sept 14 with this info but was unsure if you received it. I know in time things will get sorted out. I too am very busy lately at Corey you know what is going on at home with us.
Hope everyone has a good day! 2006 5.4l 123,000 km |

Just added my support ticket, thanks for all your help PHP. Have a great day guys !! :-)

Without going back through the prior posts (which I will, but not at this moment) I just wanted to give everyone a quickie status update.
I have been working with 2 customers over the last week that have had basically the same concerns everyone here has had and I think we are at a resolution. I'm really sorry that it has taken longer than I expected, but Corey was out quite a bit this week and I ended up a bit short handed and didn't get to the issue as quickly as I had expected. In any event, here's the deal. If you have not already filled out a service ticket, your issues will not be properly addressed. Please go to Support Login and fill in a service ticket. Make sure to include your ECM HEX code and your unit serial number in the spaces provided. We'll be rolling through the tickets this week and should have everyone addressed pretty quickly. I appreciate those who have been patiently (and sometimes impatiently ;) ) waiting for a resolution to this issue. Take care. |
I'm glad I did the support request. Last night I took a 200 mile drive and although the truck ran good, in the mountain roads where downshifting was frequesnt and necessary the transmission seemed to downshift hard. I hope the fix of level 2 will remedy this as well.

Hopefully this gets resolved soon. I'm back to level1 - tow only until then. |

update question
If there is an update for this how will I know? I have a ticket in but have not heard anything there. Will an email be sent if my calibration has an update or do I have to keep checking the ticket and this forum?

Thank you! I will be waiting.

Anything yet?
Has there been any progress with fixing this problem? I have replied to my ticket but have not gotten any response.

My strategy now is going to be to sit back, monitor the forum, and wait to see if something standard is identified that is causing this problem for us.....more of a definitive issue. It's not happening enough to be a real problem at this point. If anything, PHP may have "somewhat" resolved the issue b/c I was experiencing it more often before the calibration update. Good luck to you man. Follow up and let us know if you get this resovled. |
I submitted a ticket (#94), & purchased a program change on November 3rd. The response was "should be ready Monday" which was a month ago. still nothing. I have returned to the canned tunes and truck is running good. Just waiting patiently hoping that the rough running issue is figured out and working.

I am not trying to be pushy and I know everyone is busy, I too have the same issues and submitted a ticket Nov 7th, ticket #100. Any info would be great... Thanks guys.
Landon |
ticket #90 submitted oct 25. If there is any update on this, that would be great, even if there isn't a resolution yet.
|
are you still haveing this problem. my 08 ford is doing the missing or kinda hunting at light throttle. i know this is an old post but let me know if you find any thing.

I still have the issue. I can only use the Gryphon with the tow setting (1).
|
I submitted a ticket about Nov 6th, and ordered a new ($30) custom tune. I have returned my Gryphon to canned tunes. No issues with the canned tunes. I haven't heard anything, so just in a "wait and see" pattern. Fortunately I don't drive the truck every day, only 15K miles and have had it 2 years. I am sure since there are so many people having this same issue, it will eventually get fixed, just have to wait.

Submitted ticket first, #94, then ordered tune on the same day, I think.
My invoice for this tune lists the support ticket on the invoice, so I think its reported properly. I think Corey would have mentioned something if there was missing information, just like she did when I originally converted my Edge. |
Ok, I'll leave them a note on the mod board.
|
I think one of my older posts, somone did. I can wait, I'm in no hurry. If I dont hear anything after January, I will call.
