Gryphon wont connect after cam phaser replacement

Nobody's gonna blast you for wanting help. As it goes, we spend much of our days on the phone so for some people it often ends up being phone-tag for a while.
Now to the root of the problem... why is the Gryphon not connection to Pegasus? What error message(s) are you receiving? Also, did Ford update your ECM when they replaced the cam phasers? I'll be in touch as quickly as possible to discuss. Thanks. |
I know this isn't "General Support" but I started your own thread for you and your problems any ways. So it can get the attention it deserves.
Peace!:) |

You of course need to have set your truck back to stock before changing anything in the Gryphon. Then, do you still get the poor performance out of your truck when it's running at stock? If so, the problems with the truck and not the tunes. The dealer needs to get this right for you - take it back to them (in the stock setting). If, however, the truck runs fine at stock, (except it's not much fun :giggle:) but "acts up" with the tune, after you've upgraded the firmware, then something probably needs to be adjusted in your tunes. Bill will have to get back with you. Hope this helps. (And I wouldn't worry too much about what you see monitoring timing. I seem to recall other people saying it goes all over the place depending on engine load.) - Jack |
As long as your truck is programmed to stock then go ahead and update the programmer. After you update you will have the three canned tunes. Then you go to [Download Custom Tunes](or something like that) and then pegasus will replace the canned tunes with the custom. :thumbs up yellow:
And like Jack said, if it doesn't run correctly in stock then take it back to whoever changed it out for you. |
You CAN do what Longshot suggests too, if you (or Bill) suspects your tunes may be corrupt. I think I'd try just a firmware update first though.
When you program your truck after any of these changes, skip the "Custom Options menu". This will allow the Gryphon to build correct stock files. - Jack |
Help!
Guys, you have all been great. I will give this a shot later today. If anyone knows what would cause retarded timing in stock trim.. please give some advice. Neither dealership here can figure it out cause not throwing codes. Both state that cold air intake alone shouldn't cause retarded timing and so did K & N. Trying to stay calm and not take hammer to it. Dealer had it for FIVE weeks waiting on parts.
Again, the best members on the best forum... |
2005?
Did the dealer check your 5.4L's injectors? Just a thought. |

When you get a moment, can you grab some data for me? I need the following: Load Spark MAF V RPM This will be extremely helpful in diagnosing what's going on with the spark. Under heavy acceleration, negative numbers are not unusual at all. However, if you're seeing less that 10-16 degrees under moderate load then something is amiss (no pun intended). If you could go to the datalogging menu, set up the datalog to read those values, and then run a datalog session it will store up to about 6 minutes of data on the programmer. You can then use Pegasus to pull the data off the unit and send me the file for examination. I'm curious if you may have a faulty knock sensor or if maybe the knock sensor is picking up some random noise and interpreting it as knock and yanking out timing. Let me know if you have any questions on this. Thanks. |
If you aren't sure about the datalog feature this should help out...

COnnection
Ok. I will try to get a data log but now when I connect, I am getting this error message...
Unable to determine Gryphon Model. The Gryhpon may be in 'Run' mode, is currently set as stock writer,or memory is corrupted. I reset back to stock before trying the updates. It still wouldnt update what it stated I needed unless I did both updates. So, updated both, then downloaded custom tunes again...:sigh: |
Humor an old man -
It sounds like you successfully updated both the firmware AND the calibrations on your Gryphon through Pegasus, right? And THEN, you successfully downloaded and reinstalled your custom tunes through Pegasus, right? But now, when you connect the Gryphon to your truck, it gives you an "unable to determine Gryphon model" error message? This is most puzzling, because this error is normally only seen in Pegasus when connecting to the PC, and I can't for the life of me figure out why you'd still be mucking around with the PC, since you've done successful updates. If you ARE seeing this message on the Gryphon's screen when connecting to the truck, you DID have the ignition key in the ON position before connecting the Gryphon, right? If nothing I say is helping, it sounds like you will have to get Bill's help on this. I'm out of ideas. - Jack |
Interesting issues you have.
"You may see this error in Pegasus when connecting the Gryphon to your PC to download custom tunes. You should still be able to use the [Targeted Functions] menu option in spite of this error. As long as the firmware hasn't been damaged during an update causing the serial number to be lost, Targeted Functions can usually recover the unit. If this is not possible, contact PHP for assistance." |
Update
I was prob unclear as to what happened. When it asked to reconnect... once reconnected.. this is when the error appeared. I do not get the option of hitting the 'ok' that is prompted for after a reconnect do to the error. When I go to the update for custom tunes, this option is still available.. I dont think it is finishing the update.

Pegasus
Yes, this is when I am trying to reconnect AFTER the download as instructed to from the prompt in Pegasus. I reconnect and get this error. So, after reconnect to Pegasus, I cannot do the ok to finish the custom download.

No, this seems to be a bit of a "bug" (or a misleading instruction), I think. I'm quite sure your tunes ARE downloaded and you can just take the Gryphon back out to your truck and plug it in.
If you see your hex code when you do so, you should be fine. One more thing, the old "Targeted Functions" menu option that 88Racing was talking about is now called "Custom File Download". (I'll change our list of "fixes", 88). - Jack |
I keep forgetting that!!!!!!!! Good catch Jack!:) |
Cutom Tunes Download
Thanks so much for the support. I will try to upload the tunes to the truck when leave this afternoon and see if they are in the Gryphon. I didn't get this error message the first time I downloaded my tunes in November so I was a little concerned. If tunes are in, I will run the data log that is requested and get that too ya. Honestly, I so appreciate the help. :happy-dancing: Like I stated, my dealerships are lost without the truck computer throwing codes.
