"Gotts" mod. Remove silencer?

Been talking to Bill about my problems with the S&B CAI and with his opinions, I've decided to ditch the S&B and go with the Gotts mod. So all lastnight I was researching as much as I could. Read the threads here and at other sites. It seems alot of people who have done this mod(or it's many variations) have also removed the "silencer". I didn't even know what that was until I started researching doing this mod :embarrassed: . Is this something I should do as well? Does my year and model truck(08' 4.6L V8 2wd) even have one?

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Rob

They aren't really hurting anything.
If anything if they are removed the drone can come back also.
I left mine alone when I did the gotts mod.

Yes Rob, yours has the "resonators" too. They're there to prevent noise (and standing waves that could actually interfere with proper airflow). I would not cut them off or otherwise interfere with their function.

LonestarROB Wed, June 2nd, 2010 12:26 PM

Hmm....unpacked my stock intake and couldn't even find this "silencer" thing I've seen in pictures.

Oh well. Guess I'll just leave well enough alone and just do the Gotts!. :D

88Racing Wed, June 2nd, 2010 01:35 PM

I think the 4.6 one is different.

This is for a 04-08 5.4.

Longshot270 Wed, June 2nd, 2010 02:36 PM

Ok, so I just ran out side and snapped a few pics with my phone so they aren't the greatest but you should get the idea.
Attachment 552
This shows the "Helmholtz" resonator in relation to the intake tube and filter.

Attachment 553
This picture is a front view that has the gotts mod. I'm not sure why anyone paints the PVC because I used the bright white pipe and you cant tell its there. Maybe that is just a 5.4 thing. :giggle:

I have pics around page 20 of this thread. I also added some later on I think.
http://forum.gopowerhungry.com/resou...ctures-20.html

Btw, we've pretty much got the same truck, 2008 4.6L, I would also be able to run your custom tunes if that last "B" on your HEX was a "3".

Looks like I messed up the attatchments but they still work

The attachments?
I don't see them?

Can't see em either. :matt-roloff:

Yea, my intake looks nothing like the pic 88Racing posted. Was able to find a 3" flexible coupling at Lowe's this morning, but no PVC pipe. Going to try to make it to another Lowe's and Home Depot tomorrow.

Here are the two pictures...again. :giggle:

If you were closer I'd give you my leftovers. I have enough for maybe 3 or 4 gotts mods on the 4.6.

Jackpine Wed, June 2nd, 2010 09:16 PM

The pictures show now, Longshot. The 4.6L is MUCH different than the 5.4L!

The new "Gotts" intake on a 5.4 is VERY exposed, about 3-4 inches.

I don't really think the intake has changed at all on the 4.6L 2V since 97.

Yup, even the older 5.4 2V used it. I'm not sure when they switched over to what they have now though(with the square filter).

Probably when the 5.4 3V came out in 2004.
In 2009 it was changed again.

That is what I thought but wasn't sure.

Yup, that's mine with the big ol filter box. Picked up a 3" flexible coupling yesterday but wasn't able to find the PVC pipe. Will try to get to some other stores this morning.

There's GOT to be PVC pipe in Home Depot or Lowes. You need 3", Sch 40 stuff. This is "standard" cold water supply pipe for homes. Failing that though, you COULD use the grey Sch 80 PVC electrical conduit pipe. It has one end that is "flared", which of course doesn't matter since you won't use that end.

I'd be a bit leery of the flexible stuff. Some people have reported that it "puckers" in under the effect of air passing through which would actually restrict airflow.

- Jack

Longshot270 Thu, June 3rd, 2010 11:52 AM

Heck, try running without the snorkel for the time being. Wont be any different than a CAI with nothing more than the airdam.

Oh no, they did have PVC just sold out of the size I needed(sans a 10 foot piece). I'll get it at another HD/Lowes.

What is "Sch 40"? I was just looking in the Plumbing department.

Jackpine Thu, June 3rd, 2010 12:12 PM

It's just a designation that will be printed on the pipe itself. I THINK it relates to pressure and possibly temperature capacities. It has fairly thick walls, which you need for rigidity. The SCH 80 electrical conduit seems to be identical in wall thickness.

There's another white pipe "SCH" designation that is quite thin-walled. I think it's for waste (drain) pipe only. Stay away from that.

Schedule 40, I think that is just how they catorgize the strength/thickness. I got a 3 ft section in the same section as the flexible 3" fitting.

Well between me and Jack we should have every possible reason for the name. :hehe:

88Racing Thu, June 3rd, 2010 12:25 PM

Pipe schedules only relate to durability and wear.
It also indicates pipe wall thickness and years of expected use.
I could have a sch10+sch40+sch80 and all 3 could be rated at 300 psi.

Hope this helps?

LonestarROB Fri, June 4th, 2010 01:38 PM

Will PVC-DWM SCH-40 Foam Core work? If not then I'm screwed because thats all anybody has around here. Nothing in the 3" except foam core.

Longshot270 Fri, June 4th, 2010 01:46 PM

Yeah, I think that will work. Is it only about a 1/4 inch thick? Just make sure that the 3" connector will fit over it. I just checked the scrap I have and it says 3 inch coex cellular core. It looks like it has a super fine foam(an offwhite color) between two thinner white layers.

Longshot270 Fri, June 4th, 2010 02:11 PM

We kinda got off track. If the inside diameter is 3 inches, the material is rigid and it will fit in your connector then it will work. You dont have to use a specific material for this, just something that will work.

Sweet! Yea thats what mine says and looks like. Tag on the shelf called it Foam Core. Just wanted to make sure. Time to break out the sander i guess. :woot:

Longshot270 Fri, June 4th, 2010 02:27 PM

You dont have to use a sander if you dont want to. I used a regular hack saw to cut a notch then cleaned it up with my pocket knife and it turned out just fine.

LonestarROB Fri, June 4th, 2010 03:22 PM

Made a(possible) interesting discovery. This is the piece, that goes into the fender, from the S&B CAI being removed.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...s/IMG_0220.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...s/IMG_0221.jpg

It's exactly the right size(obviously) to fit the hole. Couldn't it be made to work and not need the PVC?

Longshot270 Fri, June 4th, 2010 03:24 PM

That will fit into the fender perfectly but the intake might be just a bit too far away to connect. Try it and take some pictures so we can see.

LonestarROB Fri, June 4th, 2010 03:53 PM

bah, yup its far too short. Back to work.

Longshot270 Fri, June 4th, 2010 04:04 PM

Thats fine, if you look at my picture from the kidd4cars thread it didn't initially have the groves cut on the top. I added that afterwards to make it easier to clip in.

LonestarROB Fri, June 4th, 2010 05:19 PM

Does the pipe that goes into fender need to go through BOTH holes or just the first one?

Jackpine Fri, June 4th, 2010 06:44 PM

It probably doesn't have to go though both, but my original snorkel did, so I made sure my new one did too.

- Jack

LonestarROB Fri, June 4th, 2010 07:18 PM

Yea, Gotts says atleast 2 inches so that's what I'll try to do. Ugh! Getting the pipe right is a pain. Giving up for the day. Get back at it tomorrow.

Longshot270 Sat, June 5th, 2010 02:52 AM

I think the reasoning is because you can suck up leaves if it only makes it past the first hole.

LonestarROB Sat, June 5th, 2010 11:40 AM

Done! I think . Probably just jinxed myself :hehe: . But pipe fits through both holes pretty dang snug(had to use WD40 to get it back out after test fit lol ). Cleaned it up and got it all smooth. Hit it with a quick coat of black paint just incase any of the pipe ends up showing. Let that dry for a while and its on to reassembly.

I've had the battery disconnected this entire time. Is that right? Reconnect after I get it all put back together? Any special steps to do so the comp "relearns" or whatever?

Rob

Longshot270 Sat, June 5th, 2010 11:48 AM

You didn't need to unhook it for this but it doesn't really matter. Post some pics so we can see when your done.

LonestarROB Sat, June 5th, 2010 11:53 AM

Will do.

Also cleaned my K&N filter and it's supposed to dry for a day. But thats under normal temps I think. It's in the hundreds here so it shouldn't take but a couple hours. :D

Longshot270 Sat, June 5th, 2010 11:59 AM

Wow, we have nearly the same exact setup.
You dont have a bunch of offroad lights on the outside and neon/LED on the inside aswell do you? :hehe:
I love my K&N because I can clean it every time it turns black. I should probably think about getting one of those prefilter covers they make for CAIs with how gross it gets. Makes me wonder why my stock filter never seemed to get nearly as dirty. :hmmm:

LonestarROB Sat, June 5th, 2010 12:17 PM

:hehe: Got 2 KC HiLites on the front bull bar. Only LED on the inside is the dome light, but I got LED's on the license plate and 3rd brake light. :giggle:

Now just waiting for Bill to finish up the tunes so I can put the CS back in and unleash her. lol

Longshot270 Sat, June 5th, 2010 07:16 PM

The mod looks good. That is also the cleanest engine bay I have ever seen. I dont think mine came off the lot that clean! :hehe:

I also like the red theme. I went with a blue(interior)/black(most aftermarket add ons)/grey(original equipment). Tonight I might get my tripod out and take some good pictures of the interior neon and stuff. I could go under a walmart sign to have a blue overglow. lol

Jackpine Sat, June 5th, 2010 07:48 PM

Good looking work and a nice looking truck, Rob! I think you're going to be happier with this CAI than with the commercial one. You'll probably be able to sell the "noisy" one. :hehe:

- Jack

LonestarROB Sun, June 6th, 2010 08:50 AM

Thanks Jack.

Honestly not sure I even want to mess with selling it. It's been trouble enough. Think I'll hang it from the garage roof and hit it with baseball bat every time I walk by. :hehe:

LonestarROB Sun, June 6th, 2010 10:41 AM

Longshot270, Did you oil the inside of the cone on the K&N filter? I don't have any instructions on how to oil the K&N filter.

K&N Air Filter Cleaning Instructions

LonestarROB Sun, June 6th, 2010 12:48 PM

Thanks Longshot!

Guess I just didn't put enough oil on because it didn't really absorb through that much. Put some more oil on and will let it sit till after lunch and then install it.

Longshot270 Sun, June 6th, 2010 03:04 PM

Just make sure you dont over oil the filter. That is the biggest danger of these kinds of filters.

LonestarROB Sun, June 6th, 2010 05:47 PM

Yea, that's why I was going lightly. I gently wiped it with a paper towl until it didn't leave any oil on the towl. Figured it was good to go after that and put it in this afternoon. Am looking at paper filters though. Don't think K&N makes paper ones for my truck.

Longshot270 Sun, June 6th, 2010 06:00 PM

No, if you go paper it is probably cheapest to go with the motorcraft.

LonestarROB Wed, June 9th, 2010 11:22 AM

Oh I know he probably is. We had just been trading dozen emails for a day or 2 and then they just stopped. Seemed strange. Probably try to give em a call in a day or 2 if I still haven't heard back. Really just want to know what the best/safest way to run the truck is until he finishes tweaking my tunes.

Longshot270 Wed, June 9th, 2010 02:41 PM

You could probably set the programmer back to the basic settings with pegasus. The canned tunes were not designed to run with a CAI. That would be better than stock.

LonestarROB Wed, June 9th, 2010 03:10 PM

You mean Fusion? Reset to the default tunes and use one of those?

Longshot270 Wed, June 9th, 2010 05:36 PM

Oh, I forgot you had a CS with custom tunes.

Since I'm not completely sure what would happen I think you should leave it alone. Fusion and the CS/CTS are still uncharted waters for me. :sigh:

I do know that Bill is working on getting caught up so it shouldn't be too long.

LonestarROB Wed, June 9th, 2010 05:49 PM

Shot him another email. See if he answers this time. If not i'll call.

Hope y'all aren't floating away down there. ;)

Longshot270 Wed, June 9th, 2010 06:04 PM

Ok, just be sure to relay whatever he tells you so.

Well I was in class when this older guy made the comment "wow, New Braunsfels got 16 inches." San Marcos is the meeting point of the San Marcos river (springfed here straight from the Edwards aquifer so there is little significant change from one storm) but the Blanco river has picked up over 20 miles of creeks and other tributaries. I live right on the river after they meet so I was thinking "OH $#%*!!!!". Then I hauled buns to a stretch of river where I eat lunch and saw that the Blanco was only about 6 inches high. Whew! :thumbs up yellow: But the storm yesterday and last night till this morning was crazy.

Remember this is phone closure week, so if you try calling and don't get any answer.
That's why.
Next week they are open but Corey is having surgery and they will be answering the phones but understaffed.

LonestarROB Wed, June 9th, 2010 07:56 PM

Yea, that's why I wanted to try and get some answers before next week. Forgot about no phones this week though.

It's just strange. Bill and I traded 13 emails last Tuesday, and then they just stopped and I've heard nothing.

LonestarROB Thu, June 10th, 2010 11:50 AM

Dont worry, Al Gore is a politician at heart and what are politicians good at besides having secret affairs? They are good at messing up bad enough at some time to knock them out of the public's eyes. :hehe:

LonestarROB Thu, June 17th, 2010 12:03 PM

After a week or so with the Gotts mod and new tunes, proud to say I'm pretty happy. No more of that nasty vibration from the engine I was getting with the S&B. Tunes seem to be ok. Truck doesn't seem to have quite the same "giddy up" as the previous tunes, but that may just be my imagination because it's different going from Stock to S&B/Tunes then going from S&B/Tunes to Gotts/New tunes. Dunno.
