What are your 3 tunes?

What are everybody's 3 tunes they have on their Gryphon? I am shipping my Edge this week for the upgrade and one free tune and I am not sure if I should get a Custom PERF 93 or a custom PERF 87 while keeping the 87 Stock tranny and 87 stock tow calibrations. I will have my Saleen CB exhaust and K&N drop-in installed by the time I get it back.

Any/all comments are welcome. :2thumbs:

I would make sure on your application for you tune you make sure and let Bill know the upgrades to you truck so that he can factor those in and make the most out of whatever octane tune you choose.

jimmyv13 Wed, March 4th, 2009 02:54 PM

The application is filled in with the exhaust and drop in filter noted. I am leaning towards the 87 perf custom tune, that way there's no need to run 93 if I wanna have a little fun on the weekends.

Looks like I am also going to do the DVW intake mod this weekend...

I got the 87 performance just because I probably wouldn't want to run 91+ when gas goes back up. But I got it in place of the canned 87 tranny tune so that I could keep the canned 91 performance tune in case I ever wanted to run it.

I agree with JWBFX4 - if you're only going to get ONE custom tune, have it put in the Level 1 position. Keep the canned tow and the 91+ performance tunes.

Bill's 87 performance tune is kinda like 2 in 1...........it's definitely a performance tune, but yet it is an improvement in fuel economy as well (unless of course your flogging it steady).

I also have an 87 towing and a 91 performance!

TXWolf Wed, March 4th, 2009 07:21 PM

I've ordered a custom towing tune, along with an 87 custom performance tune. I'm leaving the tranny tune alone for now. Man .... I can't WAIT to get my Gryphon!!!! :happy-dancing:

That's a good idea...I've never even used the 87 tranny canned tune.

If your only going to get 1 Tune, go with the 87 Performance. You WON'T be disappointed!! :2thumbs:

88Racing Wed, March 4th, 2009 11:35 PM

My order was 87 performance and 87 tow performance with max economy for both. Left the 91 canned alone.

nice thread. i just joined this forum, alot of knowledgable people here. im planning on ordering a gryphon next wk. and im looking for some help as far as custom tunes. Currently i have a 40 series si/do flowmaster installed but after the gryphon i plan on adding more mods.

i want to take advantage of my exhaust/ future mods on all 3 levels. im thinking of doing a 87perf/econ tune, custom 87towing tune, and a custom 91+ tune for balls to the wall action.

do i need 3 custom tunes or should i leave the 3rd alone? im pretty sure i want a 87perf/econ tune and a custom towing tune for power up hills etc.

How does your 87 custom perf tune compare to your 91 canned tune?

SubiGT Fri, March 20th, 2009 09:10 PM

Bump..

As far as tunes go, is it possible to get a canned 87 performance tune? I don't want the tranny only one. Would that be considered a custom tune? I am putting it on a bone stock 2008 5.4L

jimmyv13 Fri, March 20th, 2009 09:22 PM

The Edge doesn't come with an 87 perf tune.

I was referring to the Gryphon.

It comes with tranny only, tow 87, performance 93.

I would like to substitute the the tranny only for a performance 87. I will not be modding the motor at all, so a custom performance 87 tune to account for CAI, pulleys, CBE, headers, etc., would be a waste of money for me. A canned performance 87 would fit just fine, if it is available.

The Edge and the Gryphon have identical canned tunes. The perf 87 tune you are wanting will be a custom tune even if you are bone stock.

That's what I was wondering.

Thanks

What does the "Tranny Only" setting do? Makes shifting more firm and that's it?

That's correct. It does, however give you the ability to modify things like tire size, shift points, maximum speed, maximum rpm, etc., through the "Custom Options menu. I saw it as a somewhat useless canned tune and had it replaced with an 87 octane performance tune.

With any tune combination I would always be able to to change my tire size, shift points, maximum speed, maximum rpm, etc... right?

91 Tune

I currently have an Edge programmer on a stock 08 F150 5.4L.
I will be updating to the Gryphon later this year once all my mods have been added. I want to have a 87 Tow, 87 Perf, and a 91. Will a canned 91 work with all the mods (CAI, Cat back...) or will this have to be a custom tune as well?

jimmyv13 Tue, April 7th, 2009 01:55 PM

You might as well just stay with the 87perf tune and not bother with the 91 canned tune. My 87 custom tune runs circles around the 91 canned tune.

Lepricon Tue, April 7th, 2009 05:33 PM

I just ordered my gryphon along with 3 customs. An 87 performance an 87 tow and a 93 performance just in case i wanna horse around.

04FX4 Tue, April 7th, 2009 11:36 PM

Level 1 Custom Peformance 87.
Level 2 Custom Tow Tune 87.
Level 3 Custom Performance Tune 93.
