I think I need my calibrations looked at
I was told by Cody...
"Ok. The original poster's problem should be resolved. I will leave this thread open until I find out for sure. For anyone else that needs their calibrations looked at, please start a new thread as your problem may go unnoticed if you put it here." So that is what i'm doing. I think I need my calibrations looked at, I have custom 87 tow tune, custom 87 performance tune, and custom 93 performance tune (my profile is up to date with my HEX code and serial #) In all 3 tunes, I'm experiencing the sputtering problem that seems to be going around. The truck runs perfect on the stock tune and on the canned tunes, it only sputters with the custom tunes. For reference, this thread explains all the symptoms that I am experiencing to the tee. Before realizing that it only occurred with the custom tunes, I replaced the spark plugs and the COP's (Motorcraft PZT14F plugs and Motorcraft COP's) thinking that I had a bad one, but it did not fix it. I would appreciate it if you could take a look at my tunes and see what you can do. It has become quite a problem recently as it is sputtering more often now. It used to do it about once a month or so, which I could live with, but now it does it about 1-2 times a week. It's got to the point where I'm thinking of abandoning my custom tunes and reloading the canned tunes on my Gryphon... PLEASE HELP |
Testing, testing, 123.... yup the forum is working and able to post replies...

You haven't been forgotten but I'll leave a post for Cody on the mod board.

Take another look at this thread.....http://forum.gopowerhungry.com/gryph...puttering.html
I haven't heard from this other customer yet. And for crying out loud, IT'S THE WEEKEND. As soon as I hear back from the last customer, I'll get right on your tunes. |

Sorry Cody, I didn't realize what day of the week it was because my 3 day weekend doesn't officially start until tomorrow.

Tom,
Since your calibrations were written in September of '08, I don't have an invoice listing the specific order of the tunes. I know what the tunes ARE, but not which level to each was assigned on the programmer. |

1) Custom 87 Octane Tow 2) Custom 87 Octane Performance 3) Custom 93 Octane Performance Can you explain what you are changing in the tunes? Like what I was saying, the sputtering problem has always been there with the tunes. All the way up until now it only happened occasionally...about once month or so, and I always just chocked it up to bad gas or something. But recently, the last couple of months, it has been doing it up to several times a day on it's bad days, but on average it does it a couple of times a week... |
Also, another thing I've noticed with my custom tunes is that the truck isn't very "spunky" at all between 0%-90% throttle (closed loop, I think), but anything between 90%-100% throttle (open loop, I think), it is a completely different truck. It's a complete night and day difference. If that is the case, is there a way to make the truck run "open loop" (I think)... The difference is seriously like comparing a Yugo to a Ferrari. If you are driving and are say at 90% throttle and the truck going along, If you push the throttle just a bit more it wakes up and pushes you back into the seat, and the RPM's shoot up FAST, but 90% throttle and less feels very much like the stock OEM tune...
I hope I'm explaining it well, it's kind of hard to describe I guess... I hope this info helps out with diagnosing what might be the problem... |
Yep, that is open loop, but unfortunately you can't run in that all the time...Well I guess you can but your truck wont last long :evillol:
|
So I take it that is where a supercharger comes in... :cheesy smile: Someday....someday... :evillol:

Ok Tom. I'm going to rewrite your tunes this evening. I haven't heard from stlhrse yet, but I'm going to get yours out of the way (hopefully on the first try) tonight.
Expect an email tonight or tomorrow morning. |
Wonderful! I look forward to giving them a try! Just let me know when there on the server, and I'll plug in my Gryphon...
|
Return the truck to stock and download the "new" custom files, Tom.
|
I just saw your post, I'll load then when I get home today. I'll only be able to try out the 87 octane tunes, I have a 3/4 full tank of 87 right now...
|
Well, I decided to update and reprogram during my lunch brake. I've only put about 10 miles (maybe) on it and have only tried the 87 performance tune, so far. The engine seems to idle much smoother. Before it had kind of a "lobe" to it. It wasn't a bad at all, just noticeable, the engine would slightly rock the truck when stopped at a red light, it no longer does this...it's nice a smooth. So far, the sputtering problem has not occurred, it runs very much like the Edge canned tunes did. My only concern is if you leaned out the A/F ratio any. The reason why I ask is in the short amount of time I was able to drive it, it says that its getting 18.2 MPG, and that was with my playing with it and running it hard, good amount of WOT and downshifting it (I was trying see if it would sputter) when coming up on red light and such. I do know my truck very well and my old custom tunes very well and it has never showed me 18.2 MPG before, I guess I just want to make sure that it's not running lean. Besides for that one concern, so far so good... It's running great! I'll get some more road time with it, and try out the towing tune as well. I'll try out the 93 tune after I use up my tank of 87. I'll keep you posted!

Well, I'm defiantly happy with 18.2 MPG (standing on it) over my previous 14-15 MPG (highway). Maybe Bill had it richer due to the cold air intake that's on the truck...i couldn't tell ya. Just as long as your adjustments and leaning it up a bit is still safe and won't destroy my engine then, then I'm all for it! She runs like a champ! |
Update:
Now that the computer has had a chance to "learn" with the 87 performance tune, my MPG have settled to about 14 or so. Yesterday I loaded the towing tune and the computer is still in the "learning" stage, but so far everything seems good. It has not done any sputtering in either tune so far. I still have about 1/2 tank (I have the big tank, I think it's 35 gal) of 87 left, once I burn it up, I'll fill up with some 93 and give that tune a go... |
Looking good. I'd LOVE for you to run the rest of that tank out on the 87 performance tune and then give us another update. If no sputtering....might be my turn :)
|
Cool.
|
That would be good if the sputtering is finally figured out.
Don't bank on that instant/average economy readout. The reason you had an average of 18 mpg while hot rodding is because when you go WOT you spend a few seconds at 5 mpg, then it takes you twice as long to roll back to your original speed, all the while accumulating 40 mpg readings. When you average them the 40 has more pull than the 5 because it having a larger value and the fact that there are more readings being averaged in. Also that 12.4 battery voltage worries me if the engine is running. |

Update:
I have now had a chance to run all 3 of the tunes, and I happy to say it has not sputtered once! The truck has been running wonderfully. Cody, I believe you have solved the sputtering problem, at least for my truck... And as for the MPG, after more miles on it, it has averaged out to being about the same as with Bills tunes... 12-13 city, 15-16 hwy. Ohh, and as for my battery voltage in that picture, the truck was not running when I took the picture. When it's running it's about 14.1v or so... Thank You Cody!!! I'll keep you guys up to date if any sputtering comes up, but I think the tunes are good to go!:happy-dancing: |
