New HEX Code = New Custom Tunes?
So, I took my truck to the dealer's to get the airbag recall taken care of and, as I've known for a long time, my HEX code is a very old version. I reset my Gryphon to stock and unplugged it before taking the truck in, and I had the dealer update my PCM/TCM.
I haven't plugged my Gryphon back in, I do have lots of updates to my PCM according to the dealer. Do I now need my custom tunes re-written? |
Yeah, if your hex code is different you'll need entirely new tunes.
|
If the dealer updated the pcm the its possible the hex code changed....
|
Ok, so I probably do have a new HEX code. How do I check?
Do I plug my gryphon back into my truck and read the new HEX code? This won't "lock" anything since the gryphon doesn't "belong" to the old HEX code anymore, will it? How do I ask Bill to re-write my tunes? Corey said he would do it once I updated my PCM/HEX - http://forum.gopowerhungry.com/gryph...t-1-2-a-2.html This site has exploded in members, and I haven't been back on here since last year! Not sure how things have changed... :) Any help would be appreciated, as my Gryphon is currently useless! Thanks, MileHigh |

Fire up Pegasus on your PC. Make sure you have the latest version (Pegasus should offer to update itself if this is not the case), and then plug in your Gryphon. Click on [Updates]->[Gryphon Update Manager] once you are connected and apply any firmware AND calibration updates it shows. This will replace the custom tunes with canned tunes that should work just fine on your truck with the new hex code. When you've done that, plug the Gryphon back into the truck and note the hex code (which you will get to Bill). But, feel free to use any canned tune while you wait for a new custom tune. If I'm not being clear, ask me to clarify. - Jack |
Two questions...
1) Did they charge you anything to update your PCM? 2) Obviously, I'd be out the money to get a new custom tune from Bill since my HEX code will change, but other than that, is there any benefit to getting my PCM updated when I take my truck in for the recall? |
Jack - you are the absolute best. I wish we were neighbors.
Texas - Yes, they charged me $70. Totally worth it. My truck shifts nice a smooth now, powerband feels beefy (for stock), no roll-back on hills anymore when I come to a stop, idles better now (I had a small shudder when the engine was warm and in neutral). I can't wait for the new tunes. I was having some serious hard-shift issues prior and have not "floored" my truck since I last posted here. I hope this fixes the issue. Cheers, MileHigh |
HELP!
Gryphon will not update. I have updated Pegasus. Plugged in the Gryphon. Selected [Updates]->[Gryphon Update Manager] -> [Update All] It downloads everything, gets through a bunch of programming screens, but when it gets to the "Updating Files" progress-bar-window, it errors out "Connection Failed - Communications Timed Out on Com 12. Please check port settings and retry." It then gives me this screen on Pegasus: Unable to update version file. Update Cancelled. Update failed. Ive connected it to 3 USB ports on my computer, restarted twice. Still same error. It always stops at exactly 50% on the Updating Files screen... Any suggestions? |
Has anyone had this problem before? I tried it again before I left for work and got the same error...
|
What's the version of Pegasus you are running? It's on the top of the screen (what we cal the "Title Bar").
|
Hi Bill! Great to hear from you again, here's my version:
"Power Hungry Performance - Pegasus V2.02.0982" |
Okay, give me a few minutes to take a look at that. Not sure what's going on. To verify, it is occurring during the "Updating Files" (or more specifically, "Finalizing Updates") progress bar, correct? Also, was this during a "Standard" update or a "Custom File Download" update?
|
Correct: error occured during "Updating Files" (or more specifically, "Finalizing Updates") progress bar.
This was this during a "Standard" update. I had my PCM/HEX changed, so I need to grab the new HEX from my truck (i.e. have to reset my gryphon to canned tunes). |

He SHOULD have been trying to restore the "canned files", due to a PCM flash. It looks like he clicked on the right choices from his post. It does not look like he used "Custom File Update" at all, and he shouldn't have of course. - Jack |
Okay, I think I've identified the issue. Your programmer is an older "Type 2" board and there seems to be an issue with how Pegasus is clearing the settings. I'll get that fixed here in a moment and get everything on the server to download. Hang tight and we'll get you straightened out.

This is the best community. Thanks for all of your help everyone. I can't wait to get home from work now and light up the tires.
There are definitely 3 things I love in life, my wife, my dog and my truck, in that order. :) I know I have an old-school tuner, and an older truck for that matter (2004 was actually a while ago...!) , would it be worth investing in a new CTS or the sort? Will I see any additional performance enhancements? Or is it more of an "oh! new and shiney!" aspect... I'm asking the experts here! |
It is the "Oh look, something shiny!!!!" You actually lose features like datalogging, WOT shift point adjustment and a few other features by going to the new color screen units.
|
Okay, Pegasus should be fixed now. Took a little longer than expected. It all relates back to changes in the USB drivers that have increased latency in the data block transmissions. Ah well...
Anyway, you can go into Pegasus and run the self update from the [Update] -> [Pegasus Update Manager] to download the newest version. If that is a problem (Vista and Win 7 like to be obnoxious) then the direct link is http://www.gopowerhungry.com/pegasus/Pegasus.exe and can be directly downloaded to the original install folder (usually C:\Program Files\Power Hungry Performance\Pegasus Update Client\). Just replace the existing EXE file with the new download. Once the update is complete, the update manager should work correctly. Let me know if you need any further assistance. Take care. |
Pegasus download complete and Gryphon flashed back to stock 'edge' canned tunes. New Hex is RXAQ6B7 (will update in my profile too).
The stock tunes are very doggy... feels like my truck is pulling a boat, even on performance. You never really know what you have until it's gone! Needing my customs back please! :) |
So I've been playing with the stock edge tunes while I patiently await my re-written custom tunes, and my serp belt is squealing at WOT shift 1-2. I'm reading a lot of good reviews on the Gatorback belts. Do any PHP members recommend them?
I think I want to change belts this week (truck has 60k on it, so about the right time), and I cannot, for the life of me, find a consistent belt length recommendation (i've seen 101.5 -> 103.25") ... that's a big range. I have a 2004 Supercrew FX4 , new body style, 5.4L 3-valve. Anyone know off the top of their head what length or Gatorback PN? I'll keep researching... |
What length is in the manual? I'd imagine it is in there considering it is something you'll have to change out in the life of the vehicle.

I cannot believe this is the first time I've been to RockAuto. I feel like the auto-gods have just shined a light down on me!
|
Installing the new Gator belt today. I will update on the squealing if it changes.
Where do I check on the status of my tunes? It's been about 60 days and was just wondering if I could get an update :) Cheers |
Noticeable difference!
No shifting issues! No belt squealing! Feels like the truck is running tighter, even at idle. I probably could have done it by myself, but it really helps to have 2 people, took about 15min. |
