Some peoples' kids (Duramax owners).
I thought you guys might enjoy this. I am doing a set of injectors on an 04 LB7 Duramax for black smoke puffs at idle and a bit of combustion knock.
This is something that I just find really funny. "Hey, y'all! Let's put a 3.5" straight-through muffler on this Duramax to get rid of the restrictive muffler. Ugh.
This set of injectors is the most "nightmare-ish" set I've ever done. I spent two hours just removing the even bank (driver's side); and that's after I already had the valve cover off. The nozzles were so carbon-ed up that I spent about 20-30 minutes on each one working them out little by little. I had one on the odd bank come out with the injector sleeve, so I had to reseal and reinstall that one (draining most of the coolant into the cylinder and on the floor in the process....I hate that). That's only the second one that I've ever had the sleeve come out (out of the dozens I've done) but it's not a big deal to reseal them. It just takes a 24 hour cure time for the loctite where it seals into the combustion chamber. I was a good bit tired after bending over that long on my knees, so I called it quits at 10:30 last night. I should have it running again later this afternoon. I still have to run to town and use my friend's sand blasting cabinet to clean the corrosion off of the injector feed lines. |
Those duramaxes take a little bit of money when those injectors are changed.....

Last set I did sounded about the same, but never pulled a sleeve. I even bought the OTC tool to pull the old ones out, and it was still a bear!

Well, it's getting towed to a dealership. Stupid people driving on bad injectors for a year and the carbon that is created on the nozzle..... :cursin:
I disrupted the loctite seal at the combustion chamber on at least one more injector and I don't have the puller tool. I'm not about to tear into that again and risk screwing up a cup with some hillbilly ingenuity. Looks like I did the next guy a huge favor....those injectors will pop right out this time! Oh well, not like I'm out anything except a few hours. Nothing else was waiting in line anyway. |

Yeah.
But it's down the road motors right now. I decided to start it this morning. I'll be danged if it isn't working flawlessly. It doesn't pressurize the coolant, it doesn't smoke, nothing. So the customer came to get it. He's going to drive it and see how it works out. He's cool with it....he is understanding of the circumstances. I think he'll be good to go. If not, off to the dealer it will go. Obviously I haven't charged him. If it works out, then I will get my money. |
Could it just have been residual coolant left in the cylinder/ exhaust?

I'm thinking that it may have gone from cylinder #5 (the one cup that did pull out) and it filled the exhaust manifold and got into #7 as I was bumping it over. The guy's got 100 miles on it already with no problems as of yet.

dumb dmax's saw one today the guy was driving the thing with half a set of bad injectors it was smoking white so bad, straight raw fuel.. think he would be smart...but guess not..clean truck too.

Picked up another one today.
I have NEVER heard one knock this bad with such little injection pressure. CHA-CHING!!!!! I've seen a couple around town that I've thought about confronting the owners about, but on the same token, while the job does pay very well, it's also one of those jobs that you WORK for the money. |
I have one in now thats getting a set of injectors....fun fun.

I get to take this one back apart since the guy brought his own injectors from NAPA....
#2 overfueling. GRAND. I won't have that injector until Tuesday....and it just has to be on the hard side (even bank). If once isn't bad enough, twice certainly sucks. |
Were your fuel trims out, puffing black smoke at idle?

Slight knock at idle and 13% balance rate on that hole (when the rest were + or - 1).
Not acceptable. Runs like a mad chief though which is better than I can say than it did before. Anything over 1/4 APP and the thing would start frickin' rattling to beat the band and smoke out both lanes. |

After the first half dozen, you'll get it down to 5 hours.
I got this one buttoned up this afternoon. It's amazing how these trucks even run when the inlets get clogged up (by the way, you ain't got nothin' on the last two sets I've done). |
I have only done a couple D-Max injector changes so far (thank goodness:)), but I was still able to beat book time.
Now if only there was a better tool for popping the injectors out I could save a ton of time. That stupid OTC tool and a screwdriver cannot be the most efficient way of doing it. I am surprised it ran as well as it did, only complaint on my RO was a haze at idle, otherwise ran fine. |

Thought I might dig this one back up. Had one come in with a terrible knock and ridiculous amounts of black smoke. After finding the injector that was the issue and verifying it still had compression (guy drove it quite a ways like this) I decided it was this trucks turn do get a set of injectors.
I spent the past few hours pulling down the passenger side I got to the #5 injector and guess what - the sleeve popped out. I was amazed how easily the injector popped loose, then go to pull it out and make one hell of a mess of everything when coolant comes shooting out....joy. I do have a question though, when I push the sleeve back in do I stick the injector in while I wait for the Loctite to cure? |
I do.
I just leave the coolant out and let it sit overnight afterward. This way, if you're feeling confident (no reason not to), you can at least get the truck put back together (since getting to the injectors is the time consuming part anyway!!). |
