Hey ya'll--Texan who piggy-backed here from f150online...
A few years ago I interacted with Bill through the f150online forums, and he was so very nice, however, due to life getting in the way I could not follow up with my issues or my contact with him.
Ive had some programmer issues lately so I have been poking around trying to get some programmer stuff done and it all lead me over to here from f150online. After reading the site information, this place sounds like a warm and way more intimate formum hosted by some truly good people. My name is the same from the f150 forums. I have some neat interactions over there and it looks I will have the same for this forum as well. :D |
Glad to have you join us Texas! :thumbs up yellow: Hope you can get the problems you're having squared away.
I don't know that any of us can offer more than you've already gotten, but feel free to ask. Did you get any response from Edge? Regarding the "shudder" problem, can you be more specific? Does it happen at or near a shift? If so, there may be something you might try. - Jack |
FYI--for those who dont know me from f150online (and Im sure thats pretty much everyone)....
I bought my 2005 brand new in completely sock form. 5.4 V8, towing package, fx4 package, captains chairs with conlole shifter, fabric interior, extened cab 6.5 ft bed, 17" wheels with 3:55 gears. this is my leveling kit with 32" tires and lariat 18" wheels. http://http://www.supermotors.net/ge...e/img_0562.jpg I have alot of fun with my truck.. off roading.. http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/5...e/img_0030.jpg mudding http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/6...e/img_0303.jpg towing http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/9...e/pa161770.jpg Im not just a poser, and daddy didnt pay for or build my truck for me (as I have been accused of many times before). I have built my truck from day one with help from friends and my boyfriend. We do all of our building in our own driveway, even the lift was done in the driveway on jackstands and dedication. This is the hardwork and rewards that come from having a great hobby like this. I hopt to get very good with everyone here. |
THANKS! I tried looking at their site but they have so many names for all the downloads and so many warnings that Im very reluctant. Im not even sure what edge I have right now.
JackandJanet--I did search the posts on this forum already though, and found a problem similar to mine. You and others suggested that he change the torque converter lockup up and down (Im paraphrasing). this made his problem go away. You may not remember the post. Ill try to find it. |

Now, that may not be what you want, since you do a lot of offroading. You may find things work better if you raise these settings, which should give you more power. Make small changes and see what the effect is. Looking at your pictures, you've probably put larger tires on, and keeping the truck in a lower gear longer should work better for you. - Jack |
awesome, thanks. Im starting with 2 notches up just like the previous posts and I will test drive it.

Yep, the flutter is a common problem because that is also a common speed in slow traffic or small towns.
As Jack mentioned, I have also turned all my shift points to the minimum to keep RPMs down in stop and go traffic. When I approach the shift zones I'll just drop the shifter into 2nd or hit the O/D off button to drop down into 3rd. That way the truck avoids unnecessary shifting. Pictures are worth 1,000 words and this is handy to remember when you are adjusting shift/lock points. http://forum.gopowerhungry.com/membe...k-examples.jpg Feels weird to think I made this two years ago for a very similar problem...but for a guy way up north (north Texas that is :hehe:). |
I'm confused now. On multiple levels.
But before we go on and beat this dead horse , should I carry this to a different section of the forums? This section is for introductions and I don't Want to upset anyone . |
Go ahead and post what you don't understand. I'll move it.
|
Ill get back to ya, my phone is acting up.
Thanks ! |
this is about the 4th time Ive tried to post and I get kicked off and the forum unlogs me and lose my whole post.
1. Should I be moving the values on the lock up settins up or down? I moved them up 2 increments then test drove it. still suddering. then I moved it up 2 more, and it does it a little less, and it seems less violent when it does happen. also, should I be messing with all the other gear lock ups? like the 1-2, 2-3 ect... 2. why is the shudder happening now? Its been fine for a few years, but I also noticed it happening more when I switched to level 3. I stopped daily driving it so I figured that putting it on level 3 would have more power and I actually got better gas mileage. Before I kept it on level 2 since my stock gears were pulling such a big tire, and the last time I talked to Bill he agreed with this logic. 3. my speedo is almost right on and the value I entered into th edge for my tire size is 2714. I have a 35x13.50x20 tire. Could this be off? thats all I can think of right now. I would just get custom tunes and have it updated but it seems the turn around time seems long and I have an offroad trip coming up on November 11th so I dont want to chance it. Maybe after that I will do it. But for now, it would be great if this could be fixed just my pressing a few buttons. btw, Is this shudder hurting anything in my truck? so many questions, I know, but thanks for your warm welcom, time, and consideration. |
The 2714 value you're using for your tires looks right to me. Don't change it.
The thing is, you've got low ratio gearing at 3.55, and bigger tires than stock. This has the effect of reducing your "effective" gearing still further and is reducing your available torque. The engine is operating at a lower RPM than "optimum". From your description, this problem seems to be happening around the 3-4 upshift (and possibly the downshift too. So, that's the only change I'd make. I'd change the part throttle 3-4 up/downshift points by +5. This will keep you in 3rd gear longer as you speed up and will drop you into 3rd gear sooner as you slow down. Then, change the 4th gear torque converter lock/unlock points to +10. That keeps the torque converter unlocked longer/sooner which keeps your engine revving higher during the 3-4 up/downshift. I don't think you need to change any of the other settings. I don't really think you are gaining enough from Level 3 to offset the higher cost of fuel. This is something you have to figure out though. I DO know that Level 2 is a very good all-around tune and it's the only one I used before getting custom tunes. I think it's the one you should be using in off-road driving too. Are you hurting anything? Probably not, but that's easy to say, isn't it? - Jack |
Only move the points up. By doing that it helps keep the engine in a more powerful RPM range. The graph I posted should help you conceptualize what is happening. Also, because of how low your effective gearing is, the TC cannot downshift properly at what is probably the assigned speed. I remember Cody saying that the TC cannot lock if the resulting RPMs are below 1100 RPM (shifts may also be that was also). The computer will do some compensation based on load but because of how extreme your case is, even the standard compensation apparently is not enough. +2 may help, if it does then you are good, if not then keep going.

Alright, this seems to help alot. I test drive it again yesterday for a while and it seems much better, but I'll probably raise the points a little more like y'all suggested . Thanks again !
