How to choose custom tunes.
How did yall choose what tunes to get? What did you get?
Right now I have an Edge that I'm upgrading to a Gryphon. I currently run the 91 Performance canned tune. I use 93 octane gas. Performance: Would a 91 CUSTOM performance tune be better than say an 87 CUSTOM performance tune? Noticable difference? Economy: What would be the most effecient? A 91 CUSTOM Economy tune, or a 87 CUSTOM Economy tune? I prefer to have a CUSTOM Performance tune. That being said, how effecient is that tune compared to a CUSTOM Economy tune? Any help? I have a CAI I'm gonna install next week. I want good power, but I do drive my truck alot, so good fuel effeciency would be nice. |

How much improvement in gas mileage? I can't promise anything, but I saw about 0.5 mpgs improvement going from canned to custom tunes (using 87 octane gas). Now the hard question: Do you want an 87 octane tune? Only if 93 octane is no longer available, OR, the price differential between 87 and 93 becomes so great that it would be more economical to use 87. But, you'd need an 87 octane tune for comparison. However, the cost for the extra tune is pretty minimal, all things considered, so I think I'd get it. Some people swear the savings in gas mileage using high octane makes up for the price difference. You'd have to check this yourself. Suppose you get 17 mpg using 93 and 15 mpg using 87. That's a 13.3 % increase using 15 as a basis. (2/15 = 0.1333) Now suppose 93 costs $2.40 and 87 costs $2.10. Again, using 2.10 as a basis, the increase in cost is 0.30/2.10 = 0.143 or 14.3%. So, in this scenario, you would save just a bit of money using 87 octane. I don't know that there's a lot of difference between a performance tune and an economy tune. Basically, I think Bill just tries to give you the biggest bang for your buck. - Jack |
Yeah. I was getting better milage with the Level 3 using 93 than any other canned tune. If I get any better performance or milage with 93 then I would prefer to use that. It would be nice to have a second 87 tune if it gets good mpg. If I'm taking a road trip or as you said the price difference gets too crazy, I would like to switch to 87.
So maybe I need Bill to write me an 87 SUPER tune, and a 91 SUPER tune. |

The canned 87 octane tune is a bit of a compromise between performance and towing, though more specifically set up for towing. THis is the reason that (a) it often doesn't get the best fuel economy and (b) usually will work with most CAI setups.
If you were to go with a custom 87 performance program, the fuel economy benefits should be similar to what you're seeing with the 93 octane program and you'll be able to run less expensive fuel. Some folks have no desire to run 87 octane and that's fine. It's really a matter of personal choice. Hope this helps. |
I keep switching on the 91 and 93 because the canned tune requires 91 or higher. I wasn't trying to be confusing. :o I wasn't sure if that's the standard high as a lot of areas don't offer 93 octane. That being the case, I wouldn't want to be in a situation were I need 93 and can only get 91. I don't know if it makes a difference or not. I would gladly take a 93 performance tune though. If it produces better numbers, I'm all for it. I'll probalby order a 87 as a back up tune.
If I get two custom tunes. Say a 93 Performance, and an 87 Performance, what canned tune would I keep? Level 1, transmission tune? |
About half the folks keep the Level 1 Trans program and the other half keep the Level 2 Towing program.
|
Since I'll have a CAI installed, which would you recommend?
|
Keep the level 2 tow. You drive a truck not a dragster!
