I've heard the O/D off advice too. I don't follow it. My trailer is about 3600# and I have the O/D ON except when I'm climbing grades that cause the Torque Converter to unlock and lock back up repeatedly or that cause the transmission to cycle between 3rd and 4th gear. An occasional unlock/lock sequence is not bad, but you just don't want the transmission constantly changing state.
Let the transmission tell you what to do. That's what I do. If it seems to be pulling without "working", I'm happy. If the hills get steep enough, I'll lock out the O/D or even shift down into 2nd to lock it there. If you can keep the transmission "stable", it will run cooler. I try to keep the RPMs as low as I can while keeping the transmission in a constant state.
