CAI-Looking for some opinions before I order
 

I am getting ready to order my cold air intake but I've heard a lot about different brands and designs being better or worse. One thing i know is that I will not be going with k&n I have heard too much bad about the way they let too many particles through. Another thing I've been reading about is dry vs oiled filter. Right now I'm leaning more towards a dry filter to avoid MAF damage, but then i hear that oil filters catch a lot more particles. My main concern here though is getting an intake system that isnt going to cause engine dusting. Right now I'm looking at AFE, RFI, Quadzilla, and S&B. Not too impressed with Quadzilla but they one of the few that offer the dry filter. Let me know what your ideas are and what experiences you've had! :hmmm:

Man, don't spend so much money on the intake. Drop a 6637 in there and be done with it. If you want a nice kit to make the install smoother check out the link below. It will come with everything you need to make it look nice.

X2 on the 6637 filter, you can even just use a peice of 4'' exhaust if you dont want to buy the kit to connect up the filter, the filter is really easy to clean just pull out and use and use an air compressor to clean it

I bought a 6637 and an aluminum 45* off ebay, like $20 or something like that for the 45*. Looks great under the hood.

Just so you know, the 7.3L is not equipped with a Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF).

You are right about K&N filters. If they are cleaned and oiled perfectly, they work pretty good as long as you get the stand-alone conical kit. Unfortunately, most folks don't read the directions and dry them with compressed air which immediately ruins the cotton gauze material. The drop-in replacement filter usually doesn't seal around the lid lip and allows a ton of dirt into the engine. To tell you the truth, the stock airbox works really well as long as it seals.
It just takes too much perfection and time to justify using a K&N filter.

Do what was said above. Put a huge cylindrical paper filter on it and run!!

ok and what about a heat sheild? I like the idea of the 6637 but its just a filter without a heat sheild. I'm guessing the heat sheild isn't that important?

Not really that important. For the most part, if you leave the original LH battery box intact, then you'll get as much cool air as you need. While you're cruising down the road, the difference in air temperature between shielded and non-shielded is minimal. When you think about our trucks which are intercooled, it makes even less difference in actual intake air temperature just before the air is routed into the cylinder heads.

Um, don't know what you mean by a heat shield, but I and many many others run the heck out of the 6637 without problems.

ok well I'm going to go ahead and try the 6637 and see how i like it. I have a while before I am home and i can actually do anything anyways so everything is going to add up and get put on at once when i get back.
