My dad has a 79 Bronco that he's recently upgraded with a 429. It was originally a 400-equipped vehicle that he has tried EVERYTHING on to get better fuel mileage.
The gears he went with a few years ago were 3.0:1 out of an early 80's F-150 and it seems to work really well with that gearing.
Just changing the engine won't change anything with the gearing and the 460 will likely give you a higher top speed (although anything faster than 80 in these short wheelbase trucks is spooky).
