P1211 code
Pulled my 9500lb RV 1000 miles on hvy tow last week. At the 900 mile mark I got a code. I had been pulling hills and pushing it pretty hard, but it was running perfectly. Concerned, I found a guy to read the code and reset it ($85 ). It was a p1211 icp error. He said if it doesn't come on again, not to worry. Made it the last 100 miles with no trouble, and no codes. Been reading on here and p1211 sounds like a nag code. However, since I will be pulling my trailer back 1000 miles this week, I wanted to make sure I didn't need to worry about it. So, should this concern me?

The 1211 code means the HPOP isn't supplying enough oil to keep up with the injectors....basically.
I'm no expert, but I would make sure you are full on oil. Your HPOP is probably just a little weak and in need of replacement sometime, but will probably get you home. The tunes put extra load on the HPOP, because to make more power, it takes more fuel. To get more fuel the injectors have to fire more fuel, and since the injectors are oil actuated, it takes more out out of the HPOP to get more fuel. If the pump is weak, it won't keep up under heavy load, high demand. Probably not going to leave you walking, but is something to keep in mind for future repair. Sometimes though, the pumps will start leaking and spew all the oil out of the engine. It can be either the HPOP itself or the lines from the HPOP. Either way, that's not good 1000 miles from home. If you are extra low on oil, I would definitely get it checked out. If you aren't extra low......I wouldn't be afraid to head home. I wouldn't push as hard on the way home, but I would point the truck in that direction and try to get there. But like I said, I'm no expert. Hopefully someone who is an expert will chime in. |

Thanks for the feedback. Not low on oil, but there were a couple of tiny bubbles on the stick. Running Amzoil, if it matters. This is a 2003 excursion, by the way, with about 167k on it. The SES light didnt go off on its own in the 10-20 minutes or so it was on. I tried a restart and it went off for a couple of seconds and came back on. It seems to be running great, so I'm not going to worry at this point, but may consider a new hpop when I get home.

Update
Drove the 1000 miles home. Love the hvy tow tune. The truck ran great and pulled my trailer extremely well. Got 11 mpg too, which I thought was pretty good. However, the check engine light was on for about 800 of those miles, and I assume it is the same p1211 code causing it. There is no sign of a problem except for the light. My concern is whether or not I should ignore the light when towing or if I need to get a bigger oil pump (my FIL tells me the Adrenaline is the one to get). I don't want the pump if I don't need it, but don't mind buying it if I do. If I was running a 100+ HP tune and flooring it, I would not be too surprised at getting this code. However, I have been using the 25HP? hvy tow program to pull my big travel trailer. EGTs were peaking at 1200 sometimes on the hills, so it was working pretty hard. Boost was up around 12-15Lbs on the longer pulls. Only about 1/3rd of the drive had hills though. The rest was pretty flat, and the engine was not working too hard to maintain speed. The light came on both times in the hilly areas.
Questions: 1) My first question is, when towing 9500Lbs up hills, would the hvy tow program ever call for more oil than a normally functioning OEM HPOP could give? 2) Secondly, I am wondering if the check engine light should go off once the code condition goes away (this is a 2003), or if it has to be reset every time. The light was on after sitting overnight as well. Edit: One more question. If I get a bigger HPOP, and keep the stock injectors, do I need to have my chip reburned? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks! |

before you start spending $$$ I would have the HPO oil check out when running down the road. You will need something to monitor the pressure & %. It could be something as simple as the IPR & not the pump at all. Hopefully Cody or Dave will see this & give you better feel for what is going on.
