It depends on which state you live in and sometimes on what type of drivers license you have. That being said I also thought trying to pull a double in anything but perfect conditions with a 1/2 ton truck seems a bit of a gamble to me too I think its time for him to buy a 1 ton diesel Heh. Pulling doubles I would want a dually too.
In CO and many other states pulling triples by semi's is allowed but watching those triples wander all over the place in cross winds sure makes me glad I am not driving that truck

I know it is with a fifth wheel. I have brakes on the trailer and the boat.

I only pull it to a couple local lakes. The furest being about 40 miles. If we go to further lakes, I'm only pulling camper. Handles better than you would think. ALOT is in the actual setup of hitches. I have seen many 1ton trucks that can't go over 50 mph because the boat gets to whippin.

My toyhauler camping on the John Day River in Central Oregon:

And at Ft. Stevens in Astoria Oregon:

I can haul 3 full size quads + 1 in back of the truck or a 14' aluminum boat depending on where we're headed. We've had a lot of fun with it.
