2-1/16" Dash Clock (or any 2-1/16" gauge for that matter) 2WD Models
Just installed a dash clock in the cab of my truck in place of that useless space-taker coin holder. What helmet-wearing design engineer came up with that useless crap of plastic?
Anyway... pretty simple install. Used an abrasive cylinder on the dremel to trim away the plastic to make room for the clock/gauge. I ended up with about a 1/16" lip. Trim slowly... test fit... trim more... test fit. It's alot easier to remove a little more to make room than it is to add some back in because it's too loose. I purchased an AutoMeter Analog clock which comes with color caps for the illumination bulb to match your interior lighting. Only took about 30mins start to finish. That included tapping in to the wiring harness of the radio, solder connections and heat shrink. (aftermarket radio with amps for doors and sub... power to radio is hardly a drain since it's not 'driving' any speakers) I realize that those of you with 4x4 switches won't be able to make use of this space since you already have something useful located there. This is for those of us with 2WD and have the annoying change holder.

I tried to make coins fit but they kept falling out. How did you take it out initially? I get the part of trimming it down I am just curious about how you got started.

The piece is just held in by a couple of molded in clips. Just grab hold of the change piece and give it a good tug. May take a time or two. Much like the center console surround-trim that is around the radio/climate control. The first time you'd swear you're going to break something. After that it becomes easier each time. If you prefer, you can remove the surround-trim and reach inside around the back of the change holder and push it out from the backside. Again, either way it's just held in with molded plastic clips.

Well now I wish I had paid more attention because I had that area opened up because I was installing a remote starter. I'll see if I can find something to put in its place then because I dont really like it. Maybe I'll make a GPS holder to put in there.
Later: Wow, that was actually pretty easy I just never tugged enough to pull it out. But now I'm really curious as to why a coin holder needs a wiring harness? --- I'm thinking about getting my wire tester and seeing if they are actually hot.

The wiring harness is for the 4WD control on vehicles equipped with 4WD.

Correct but also incorrect. I have a 4x4 but I have a manual 4x4 with 4x4 shifter on the floor. I have the coin holder as shown in the picture so this mod isn't just for 2WD only.
