Anyone have one of these on a 97-03 f150? Just wondering how these work with tunes... i was in the market for a Gryphon, but if they are not available, might go with this...

In all honesty, I believe that the Phoenix would be great. The Gryphon isn't "switch on the fly" capable. On the other hand, the Phoenix will have "tunes" put on it, but it can't be fine-tuned by the end user like the Gryphon can.
I'm not sure about what someone would do with more than 2-3 tunes on a gasoline-powered rig since up to 6 are available on the Phoenix, but I know that the same tunes that are available for the Gryphon are also available for the Phoenix.

I agree with not needing more than 2-3 on a gasser. I have a tow tune and one for when I'm not towing. Then, I return it to stock whenever it visits the dealer. I HAVE appreciated the ability to "fine tune" the normal shift points and torque converter lockup points, and some other things. Still, shift on the fly WOULD be nice too.

Yeah I think shift on the fly is the big advantage to the Phoenix. you can always put that little stop washer in the TS chip on positions 3 or 4 for example and make the switch only have 4 positions... Do they still make the 4 position TS switch and have the fixed the issues with the TS chip itself that I have seen mentioned elsewhere

Yeah, the Phoenix does not have to have 6 positions. It can be 1-5 as well with the stop washer as DJ said.
As I understand it, the 4 position is no longer available and the 6 position is still a hit or miss....but I have my own suspicions as to why.

And now come the questions.
First of all Thanks a bunch, quick order and response to questions were great. What I ordered was a 6 position with the following: 1-Whisper Mode 2-Stock 3-Fuel Sipper 4-25hp Heavy Tow 5-40hp Moderate Tow 6-65hp Standard Tow The spec sheet shows: 1-Stock 2-Fuel Sipper 3-25hp Heavy Tow 4-40hp Moderate Tow 5-65hp Standard Tow Can I get a clarification on this. It sound like position 2 is a little quieter (Whisper Mode) but it doesn't seem like a big difference. Is it possible that this position did not get put on? Now concerning the different Tow modes. What is considered heavy, moderate and standard? What is the reason for less hp on a heavy tow? I will use the truck for pulling a 30ft 5th wheel almost exclusively. Unless I'm on the beach ![]() So what would the best hp setting and will that vary if I am in mountains (Va and WVa) or in the flats like eastern Va and NC? I did go for a quick spin and WOW the 65 hp really gets up and goes and I noticed the shift points changed quite a bit and the response on the shift was much smoother. Almost wanted me to hook up the camper just to see how it would run (gotta wait a couple more weeks though). Lastly in the instructions it says that is is discouraged that you shift on the fly while under load. I understand that to mean whille towing, correct? Thanks a bunch, b

If anyone reading this and is considering this product and are bummed about not getting a display. Your problem is solved with Scan Gauge(approx $150). True like others have said before there is no fine tuning with the chip but I think the switch on the fly is a great trade off. Pretty cool!

here is a copy and paste from the tow settings thread in the Phoenix forum
DJ, It breaks down like this: * 25hp - Over 20,000 GCWR (all terrain) * 40hp - 16,000 to 20,000 GCWR (all terrain) * 65hp - 12,000 to 16,000 GCWR (all terrain), 16,000 to 20,000 GCWR (flat terrain) * 80hp - 8,000 to 12,000 GCWR (all terrain), 12,000 to 16,000 GCWR (flat terrain) * 100hp - 8,000 to 12,000 GCWR (flat terrain) * 120hp - Not Recommended * 140hp - Not Recommended Keep in mind that files designated as "Tow" are designed specifically for the needs of towing (shift strategies, pressures, lockup, fuel curves, injection timing) while "Performance" programs are handled quite a bit differently. Cody, your last post was excellent! It answered quite a few questions that were in the back of my mind regarding HP and towing and clarified some other points, such as the relationship between HP and EGT.
