"Gotts" intake
I had the hood up on my truck the other day and a coworker noticed the homemade intake. He asked why I did it so I showed him the old snorkel and everything and said that makes sense. Then he asked me why I didn't just take the whole tube part off. From right in front of the airbox all the way to the fender. Told him I didn't want to be sucking in hot engine air. He said that makes sense but your fan is right there blowing air on the motor. Kind of made sense to me but I still think you'd get a lot of hot air. Maybe not so much while on the highway but definitely idling in traffic. Has anyone ran their truck without any of the factory air tube stuff? I thought about doing it for a little bit and logging the IAT's to see if there's a difference but don't really feel confident doing it. If the Gryphon gauges will show up on our work truck I may try it there. Hopefully one of you smarter people can shed some more light on it for me.

I don't think the fan is doing that much for you. You're picking up warm air since it's first coming through the radiator and A/C heat exchanger before being blown over the hot engine.
I agree with YOUR analysis, you'd be getting hot, less dense air this way and that would limit the power you are able to generate. I think the intake tube coming from inside the fender well, or a "ram air" scoop similar to the Banks intake is the best design. - Jack

You were correct. I spent a few days playing with that part of the intake and
I tried it. With the snorkel off in the city I saw the temps get up to 126. But with the snorkel on I saw 106. I'm pretty sure thats right because the temperature was 100 degrees in the shade. I didn't see as much on he highway (maybe 3-6 extra degrees at 50 mph) If your going to try logging the temps, I would log after the engine has been running for a while to get everything warm. Then log one drive with it taken out and another with it in. I have some driving graphs where I recorded IAT by accident and they dont say much. They basically say that the temp went up about 1-3 degrees per minute until I got enough speed to blow cooler air in. When I was looking into temps for the intake I did a few at idle and they said the air is about 20 degrees warmer without the snorkel.

For what it's worth, for years auto manufacturers had the intake snorkels under the hood. Of course, they were trying to vaporize/homogenize the air/fuel mixture so a little warm air didn't hurt anything. Since the ECM compensated for inlet temp, I don't see any reason why you couldn't suck air right from under the hood. Now whether you'd want to or not is another matter.
