muffler swap vs new catback

is there really a big difference in performance changing from stock muffler to a new magnaflow muffler vs changing too the magnaflow catback.on my old f150 2000 sc 4x4 w the 5.4 i changed everything at least twice,never bought gryphon though, and now i dont feel like wasting money on things that i dont need..example tb spacer,new tb ,three diff chips,4 different mufflers,2 sets of headers ,roller cams, underdrive pulleys, and dont forget two different cais.now im a little older and less money too blow ,so dont wont too waste money .plan on buying gryphon this week ,but would also like too know your thoughts about whether too buy new catback system or change mufflers.already done the gotts mod w/flex pipe.I now tow my 20 foot boat and 31 foot camper ,instead of tearing my truck up mud bogging.thanks for any input

The programmer will definitely be one of the best investments you've made for your truck. Any exhaust modification from the Y pipe where the two banks connect back is not going to have a significant enough change to worry about custom tuning. If you want better sound I would go for the cat back system.

The gryphon is probably you're best bet.
Cat backs systems seem to just improve the sound.
A simple muffler exchange plus a piece of pipe will help improve the sound also and save some coin too!

I'm not too sure the original question was answered, as I too, am wondering do I need to get a whole exhaust system, or can I swap out the muffler from stock and gain some type of benefit from the magnaflow? I understand the the tuner will be a great addition. Thanks in advance.

I got a very honest opinion from the guy who installed my Flowmaster:

Ford did a really good job on the exhaust system on the 2004+ F150s. He didn't think there was likely any HP gains to be had unless somebody went with a hi-flow cat, true-dual system, and then only a couple HP, at best.

He thought there was only two good reasons to change the stock set-up: 1) because you want it to sound better, and/or 2) to save some weight by dropping out the behemoth stock muffler.

I agree with what sburn said...if there are any gains they are very low. The only reason I had another muffler put on was just for the sound.


And that stock muffler is a monster....
