Default PHP Gryphon Up grade or change the CIA?

Good Afternoon to all,

I have been on other forums seeking guidance and gotten kicked around pretty good. It seems all those members like to do is talk smack & run down other peoples stuff. That does'nt appear to happen here. But just in case, please be gentle with me.

I have a 2008 F-150 5.4 crew cab with an AEM brute Force CAI (I know, brute force, what a joke), Edge Evo with canned tunes, Gibson cat back exhaust, Pro-Comp lift with 35" tires, 4.56 gears.

The problem: With the Evo set for tow (stage 2) and all perameters set to match up grades, the truck cuts out at approximately 70 to 74 mph. If I get off the gas and roll back into it, it cuts out. Once I get through that window, the truck runs great. No codes.

Set the Evo back to Transmission (stage 1), all perameters set to match upgrades, truck runs like a champ!! The natorious lean condition, right? (and the call me dense).

Finally, my question. I have read that PHP has dyno'ed CAI's and found only 2 that do not cause the lean condition. What would be the recomendation of the kind folks here who have experience with PHP? Upgrade the programer or the intake? I believe the cost to be almost the same.

Thanks,
Redshirt

Hi Redshirt - we won't kick you around.

I wonder, is this "cut out" you describe during acceleration? If so, it's very likely that the rev limiter is set too low and you are in a lower gear. Coming off the gas allows it to shift up and then you don't hit the rev limit (unless you really get on it).

To fix this, reinstall your tow tune and then in the "Custom Options Menu", scroll to "Load Previous Settings", which will reload your current Tire Size, Gear Ratio and other things. Then, scroll to the Rev Limit or Max RPM setting (I've forgotten what it's called), and set it to 5500. Make sure your WOT 1-2, and 2-3 upshifts are about 5000, and set the 3-4 WOT upshift to 4600.

Now, regarding the CAI - we here at PHP don't think much of them, but we can't really say they're all bad. My first recommendation is to replace it with the Gotts Mod version. You can do a search here for information on that.

And, we think you'll appreciate the "refined performance" of custom tunes, but we don't really push those if you don't want to try them. The canned Level 2 tow tune in the Edge is really pretty good for all around performance, so if it works, OK. Some CAIs DO make the engine run lean though (but that does not give the symptoms you describe), and custom tunes can fix that.

Glad you've joined us.

- Jack

Just wondering what settings you are playing around with????

That might be the cause of the cut out....

If you do decide to upgrade and get custom tunes ...you'll never have to worry about adjusting anything unless Bill instructs you to do so....

Custom tunes from PHP rock!

Default Thank you both!

Thank you both for your response.

JackandJanet, I will give it a try this weekend and and post the results then. Thank you very much for the positive input!!!!

88Racing, I went to level 2 (TOW) and in the custom tune section, I changed the gear ration setting (now 4.56), I changed the tire size to corospond with 35"s ( check the math 3 times) and set the speed limiter to 110.

looking forward to trying the new settings, thanks again,

Good Morning Jack,

I have to start by saying......YOU ABSOLUTLEY NAILED IT!!!!!!! I reset my generic tow tune on the edge evo and started going thru the recommended changes from you; Max RPM was already set at 5500, WOT 1-2 and 2-3 were already set to 5000, when I got to WOT 3-4 it was set at 4900. I backed it down to 4600 as you sugested and drove from Temecula to San Diego and back yesterday (about 60 miles each way) without a single issue. Looking into the GOTTS mod now.

Thanks again Jack,
Redshirt
