Default Blowby?

So my wife doesn't like my truck, but she said that if I trade it in that I can get a new ecoboost, So we went to the local stealership to see what they could do(I didnt expect much), so they looked at it and said that because of blowby in the engine they can't give me very much for it. What does that mean? The salesman had no idea and couldn't even start to explain what it meant. all he said was that smoke came out when they opened the oil cap.
Can anyone explain this to me, and what I can do to fix it? the truck seems to run just fine to me so I can't think that it is too bad of thing so far, but I assume that it can get worse and cause some type of damage. let me know, thanks.

To put it bluntly, they're most likely trying to bend you over.

ALL engines have "blowby" because there is no possible way to completely seal off combustion pressures from the crankcase past the piston rings. Even "gapless" or "total seal" piston rings aren't 100% leakproof.

If you have a steady stream of "blowby" when the oil fill cap is removed, the engine is fine (as long as it's not enough to force the cap off of the oil fill tube with a vengeance). Excessive cylinder pressure escaping into the crankcase from one (or a few) cylinder will cause the vapors from the oil fill cap to pulse (you'll get defined "chugs" of vapor coming out). That's bad.

If a salesman couldn't explain it, he probably heard it from one of his supervisors. In this case, he's using your inexperience to steal the truck from you....literally. Excessive or rhythmic pulses from the oil fill tube are bad, but if your truck runs fine (hot and cold), I suggest selling privately because ANY dealership is going to buy at wholesale and resell at retail. Anything a salesperson can do to make more money on trade-in (regardless if he even knows what he's even looking for), he's going to do it. Car dealerships don't make much money on new car sales; used vehicles are cash cows.

Your BEST option is to sell the truck privately, pay off what you owe, and then take the remainder for a down payment on a new vehicle. You'll get the most out of the truck you have now that way.

That was my plan unless they gave me a screaming deal Which they won't ever do. I kinda guessed that blowby was exactly what it sounds like, he also said that it had to do with the $600 injectors that my truck has, $600 a piece is what he said .
The funny part is that on the way to the dealership a person stopped me because he saw the sign in the truck and wanted to buy the truck but he couldnt read the phone number. .

Yeah, he's definitely trying to get that sweet truck off of your hands for a very low price since even though he knows nothing about how an engine operates (injectors causing blowby ) he DOES know that the 7.3L market is insanely hot and that it will sell nearly immediately for whatever price the dealership wants to charge.

She claims that it is too big... She hates driving it and really is tired of the stick shift... even in her mustang lol... Plus when we have kids in the future, no, no announcements yet, she thinks that it will be a lot easier with an automatic. I think she is right but I think it will be manageable.

So talk her into a BTS tranny and convert your truck over to auto. That would still be cheaper than selling your truck and buying something new. Tell her big is safe as you have all that steel between you anything hitting you along with the height will keep anything from coming down on top of you. Best way to keep her and your new baby when it does finally happen safe.

Lot easier said than done.

My wife doesn't like my truck either because I'm always working on it and costs so much to work on. In my defense, I'm usually "tinkering" with my truck. And yes, after 200k miles some things need tending to. I just told her that its paid for, I know what I got, they don't make them anymore, and I AINT SELLING IT

It has 18xxxx miles on it, getting close to 190, so it is starting to have some age related maintenance... such as the power steering pump is going out(how hard is that to fix? worth trying myself or should I have a shop do it?), and it needs new tires soon too :/
