Default Front Bumper?

This has been making me wonder ever since I saw the 09's.
Why are there 2 protruding black plastic caps in the front bumper?
Are they covering up something? Like the frame?

Just thought I'd post this up for anyone out there who might know.

Are you referring to the two black rectangular boxes right above the tow hooks, or is there something else I haven't noticed

Yes, those "black boxes".

In pictures they really don't stand out but looking at them driving on the street makes them look....well "dorky" or a cover up for a mistake.

Design engineers "never" make mistakes. Do they?

From everything I have seen they are called overriders. And from what I have read they protect the bumper for when you are parking (they susposedly stick out just a little bit). I personally don't believe that explanation. I believe someone just came up with that after seeing them.

if you think back to the early test mule pics from pickuptrucks.com, thay had an '04 front bumper on the '09 frame and it stuck out ~6" in front of the grill. my guess is the "black boxes" are covering the frame horns.
in case your in an accident the forces transmit to the frame first and then the bumper

Yes I had thought of the "frame horn" theory also.
We've got one coming into the body shop next week and I'll do some snooping.
