Magnaflow Exhaust
Trying to finish up my exhaust modifications tomorrow or Thurs, figured I'd post a video of the "before" I get out the saw and welder, lol.
What you'll hear here is an all Magnaflow setup: High Flow Cats, removed y-pipe and replaced with an x-pipe for true duals, two 14" oval Magnaflow single chambered mufflers run to a pair of 3.5"x18" rolled edge tips. Tomorrow I'm going to cut out the high flow cats just to see how it sounds and performs for a week or so, then depending on what I decide I'll either weld in my "replacement" pipes or remove the pre-cats and put the high flows back in so I only have 2 cats, why Ford decided to put 4 on these beasts I don't know. Which Exhaust ??
Hey Bill, What exhaust do you reccomend for 08 F150 supercrew 5.4 for daily driver and light towing? Looking for HP and MPG but still fairly quiet. Going to get a Gryphon with your Custom 87 performance tune but think I should get exhaust first, no CAI planned. What have you seen work? Single exhaust is ok . Thanks: Jim

What does removing the rear cats do to you at inspection time? I had no idea the new trucks had FOUR cats. :omg: With that much restriction, I'd bet exhaust doesn't do much for you performance wise unless you remove at least one set. GEEEZZZZ the government is killing the hot rodder....stupid government.....:mad2:

Yep, that makes a lot of sense Jack, thanks for explaining it that way. Thanks for the tip on the limiter code, too. I'll probably do the same thing you did, although it would take one heck of an emergency for me to hit any sort of speed limiter. Those days are passed, I'm a little sad to say, but who knows, Pinks might comes to town looking for an all truck 12 sec field or I might get a wild hair and bracket race it one weekend. Yeah....who knows? :2thumbs:

Never thought my truck would hit 85....then my wife borrowed it for a weekend while I had her truck tore apart. Went through the "records" on my edge, top speed: 97mph....

OBDII Emission inspectons
Cajun and Jack, Emmision inspections check more than just DTC's they also check the readiness status of the monitors in your ecm. The monitors ck operation of 4 or more operations in the ecm, EGR monitor, Evapoative emmisions monitors, Catlayst Monitors Oxygon sensor monitors and in some vehicles more. The vehicle that has been set back to original tune will not cause a DTC unless there is a fault, but doing this will make all moniotrs not ready. It takes completion of a drive cycle to reset these monitors and in some states 3 out of 4 monitors must be ready to pass. The drive cycle varies by vehicle and engine but what it does is that it verifies the correct operation of these systems on an actual road test. All manufacturers have a specfic routine of cruising, idling and accelerating over time and speed to reset these monitors. This drive cycles are usually completed easily on most Ford vehicles but others can be very tempermental and take hundreds of miles to complete. The worst thing to do is disconnect the vehicle battery before an inspection as it opens all the monitors and it will not pass until the drive cycle is completed. Many people disconect the battery to reset DTC's to pass inspection but find out that it just got worse because monitors wont be ready. I would reccomend setting it to original status a few hundred miles before the day of inspection. Low fuel level and very cold temperatures can affect closing the Cat, and Evap monitors. No, not confusing at all, great info Jim, thanks for taking the time to post it up. This is the stuff we need to know if we're going to try to tune these days with all the restrictions. Not to mention you can see the testing technology improving each year when you go. I normally try to hang around and bug the tech. Of course, though, now that I think it through, my old truck passed NC inspection, chipped, and breathing right with Flow Master pipes and it passed no problem. I won't be taking my new truck to Ford for the inspection, so I might try it through my regular guy with the tune in and any hardware out. If I fail I have two weeks to correct any problems and re-inspect. I'll have time to go to stock and drive it out of the reset code. I do 250 miles a week just to work and back.

Thanks for that post. I couldn't have explained it any better myself. For what it's worth, we're looking at adding in the system readiness monitors into the Diagnostics menu so people can see if they're ready to pass emissions testing. Just need more hours in the day... :sigh: |
Jfuller...I have magnaflow SI/SO on my truck with a 4in tip(3in mandrel bent tail pipe). On the magnaflow website it is comperable to kit 16612. This is my third truck with exhaust(the first two had flowmaster SI/DO's) and I can tell you this setup is way quieter. At highway speeds you have to turn the radio off to even hear it, but when you throttle it it wakes up. It's a good setup.

jerodr, Thanks that sounds like what i am looking for, any improvemnt in power or MPG, what MPG do you get with this complete setup including Gryphon?

jfuller...Honestly I haven't had the gryphon long so it's hard to say about gas mileage. The only time I have driven outside the city with it to get a good gas mileage reading I was pulling my boat. However I did get noticeably better gas mileage pulling my boat around 15.5 on a 300 mile trip. Normally I would only get about 13.5. I'm not a pedal to the metal type of person, I'm more into 40 -70 power and I can definately say that with magnaflow exhaust + gryphon + k&n dropin= great highway and around town power over stock. You won't be disappointed that's for sure. Maybe tomorrow I can take some pics of the exhaust setup and put them in my album if you're interested.

I know when I first cut my rear cats out I mentioned that I thought my truck was actually quieter? It's not, lol. Wife B****ED all the way to Tennessee and back!

The only upgrade I have presently is K&N cai and it will be some time before I do anymore :(. It's my daily driver and my commute is 36mi round trip, do love the HP:cheesy smile: but would also like to keep or gain the MPG :cool:. One more thing
:) I'm increasing my wheel size to 37x12.5x17, what performance gains or loses should I expect with the Magnaflow upgrade and what sound differences will there be?

Increasing tire size is going to negatively impact performance. It in effect makes your gear ratio more mild, hence requires more pedal to get the same output/performance.
Installing an exhaust may cancel out the effect of the tire size increase, but I'd say it's going to be something you'll have to do to see just how much it impacts your truck. I installed a Magnaflow SIDO on my '05 w/ 4.6L and I immediately noticed better throttle response and an improvement in performance; but, it was the only change I made at that time, so the effects were easy to notice. I can tell you though, the sound is great. I do not find it to be annoying 98 percent of the time and have not noticed any increase in mpg since I'm probably on the gas even more just to hear it. |

I kind of thought you'd be happy with the sound, it's not overly intrusive in the cab, yet you hear it when you step on the gas.
