NewB Question? Paint for Pod

Hi guys, I'm new here. Been hanging out at f150online for about 6 months now. So I'm fairly familiar with the Gryphon. Most likely gonna be ordering late next week.

I've read a lot of posts on this forum over the last few days. As far as I can tell the pod with the Gryphon should match the "warm steel" interior panels in my truck. Is that correct?

Also it looks like the Gyrphon with canned tunes is pretty much sitting on the shelf ready to ship. Is that correct?

And last but not least: Should I go ahead and pay for the custom tunes when I order the Gryphon? It appears that there may be a discount price of $30 per if you order with the programmer. Problem is I don't have my hex code. I thought I'd go ahead and order the programmer with canned tunes, then when it comes in retrieve the hex code and get that back to Bill and the guys for the custom tunes. Basically I don't want to sit around waiting for several weeks for the programmer. I'd like to get that installed just for tranny tunes if nothing else. Plus I need it to get the Hex Code. Am I on the right track here, or am I completely off base?

Thanks folks,

David Walker

If any of ya'll have info on paint and colors for the pod, please HELP!!!!

Don't know what your interior looks like but the pod is light gray. Like this..

Correct(if they currently have them in stock)

I would. Then send in the Hex code as soon as you receive the unit so Bill can get working on the tunes asap.

Hope this helps.

Rob, Thanks for the help.

Yeah the pod isn't exactly what I was hoping for. My interior is black where yours is grey. But the outer portion, next to the pillar is the same dark grey/graphite color as yours. I was under the impression that the pod came in that color, not the light/primer grey. Guess I'll have to come up with some paint for that. Any ideas on that?

Thanks for the help,

David

I've been killing myself over the last few months trying to get mine to match paint wise. It's supposed to be Dark Flint but I've tried it and it's not. I've tried several paint colors and none have really mached up close at all. Completely destroyed my pod with so much paint/sanding so had to get new one :D .

If you(or anyone for that matter) can paint their pod to match, let me know. I will pay!

x2mosg Thu, September 23rd, 2010 01:18 PM

Is Dark Flint the color of your interior, or the color of the outside parts that adjoin the pillars? I'm talking about the part that the a/c vent is in. I put in my VIN on the Ford parts website and it lists all those pieces as being "warm steel", with the rest being ebony (black). I think SEM is supposed to have the best paints, but I don't know where to get them locally. I think I could probably match my black parts easily and might end up going that route. As to the dark flint, I don't know what to tell you. I'll do some searching when I get time and see if I can find anything for you.

Thanks,

David

Yea, the column where the AV vent is is Dark Flint, according to the Ford dealer. I'll see if I can find the paper I wrote this info on. The interior color code on the door actually stands for a "group" of colors. All the colors on the interior. Mine has 4-5 colors.

Let me know what else you find.

FYI, I purchased some SEM Dark Graphite paint from local dealer. It matched pretty close according to their chart but it didn't match once I tried it. Too light.

EDIT: The above are SEM color charts for Ford.

x2mosg Thu, September 23rd, 2010 02:28 PM

Dark Warm Steel (5719) in the upper chart, warm steel (5729)lower, or medium flint (5694)lower, look to be the closest to mine. Like I said, when I put the VIN in the Ford parts webpage, it said it was Warm Steel.

What year is your truck? Mine's an '05 FX4 with black (ebony) guts. Maybe a difference in year model that makes for a different color name.

Try this link and put in your VIN just to see what it tells you. You'll go into another screen, choose BODY on the left side in the box, then instrument panel or something similar. View a part which takes you to a diagram, then you can click on various part #'s to see the description and color.

Let me know what you get from that. That may be a problem for you. The dealer may be looking at the color for the wrong part. Surely if we both tackle this thing we can figure it out.

Longshot270 Thu, September 23rd, 2010 02:40 PM

I think there is a thread on here somewhere about painting the pods but I dont remember where it is. It should come up pretty easy though. If you guys dont find it I'll look for it later.

LonestarROB Thu, September 23rd, 2010 05:11 PM

Mine is a 2008 STX.

Entered my VIN and it says Dark Flint, Medium Flint, and Black. Which is same as what the Ford dealer had told me. Although the Dark Flint I got doesn't match. But it is from a second hand dealer because Ford also told me they didn't make those colors anymore.

Longshot, can you post that link?

EDIT: Here's my truck interior.

x2mosg Thu, September 23rd, 2010 06:25 PM

I don't have pics of my guts, but mine is black where yours is light grey. The rest looks the same except the flow-through console. And I think the a/c vents in mine are chrome, but to be honest i'm not sure, guess I should pay more attention. Duh!!

This is what I get with my VIN. This is the top section of hte console, with the drink holders in the back and the hinged lid attaches to it. The "Warm Steel" is the color.

I found a couple of posts earlier, but didn't have time to get them linked in here. I'll try to do that now.

For chits and giggles I looked again on fordparts.com and found this PDF file. Might be of some help to us all.

Thanks x2mosg, I just got back on the computer and was about to go hunting for them. :thumbs up yellow:

x2mosg Fri, September 24th, 2010 12:18 AM

No Sweat. I gotta find this stuff for myself, so might as well share.

My Int/Trim code is QB. That gives me 2 colors according to the chart in the PDF file above, Black and Charcoal Black. I assume the Charcoal Black is the trim pieces, even though they're otherwise called Warm Steel.

Here are a couple of pics:

Ya know, it my be the black throwing off the eyes, but I think the pod will match up pretty well with yours.

x2mosg Fri, September 24th, 2010 10:34 AM

Yeah I think the black is decieving, and maybe that 1/2" layer of dust on everything. Been planting greens/food plots the last few weeks. Boy it's dusty here. The grey is actually pretty dark. I'd bet it's within a shade or two of yours. Frustrating part is we're getting 2 or 3 different color choices from Ford even. Looks like a trial and error thing short of getting a custom color match type thing.

x2mosg Fri, September 24th, 2010 11:04 AM

Just found this place. Looks pretty promising. Not cheap, but promising. I don't have a local place to mix custom rattle cans, so I'm limited. Small town.

Played around with my paints and old dash pod. Tried the Dark flint(which it should be says Ford) and again too light. Tried putting it over black base coat. Tried other gray paints. Tried spraying Dark flint and black at the same time  . Then smacked it across garage with nearby hammer. :cursin:

:(

x2mosg Fri, September 24th, 2010 04:15 PM

If it can't be fixed with Duct Tape or a ball-pean hammer, it can't be fixed! I wasted some money on a can of Duplicolor charcoal grey last night, and a waste it was. Not even close.

I ordered a custom rattle can from the link above. It ain't cheap, so I hope it works.

LonestarROB Fri, September 24th, 2010 04:20 PM

Yea I know. Why it ticks me off so much. Tired of wasting so much money on it.

Let me know how the new paint works out.:thumbs up yellow:

x2mosg Tue, September 28th, 2010 09:12 AM

I'll let you know. Hope to have the can in this week. They didn't say how long, just a general note that says 1-14 days to ship for custom orders. Hopefully it'll be on the lower end of that scale. Hoping to order my Gryphon this week.

x2mosg Wed, September 29th, 2010 10:34 PM

Custom rattle can was waiting at my door this afternoon. Got the first coat on now, bout to add a second light coat. It looks pretty good so far. It may be a shade too dark though. But, I put it directly over the charcoal grey duplicolor I already had on, so we'll see. I'll keep you posted and add pics if it works out or not.

x2mosg Thu, September 30th, 2010 12:28 AM

I gave up for the night. Got 3 or 4 coats on the test piece and it looks nice. But in the dark, using a flashlight to get enough light, that just isn't accurate. So, the piece is in the truck. I'll do some comparisons tomorrow in the sunlight and get a real feel for it.

Initial thoughts are that it's gonna be extremely close. I noticed under the flashlight that the dash areas seem to be discolored, I would assume oxidized. They have sort of a yellowish tint in comparison to the panels on the front of the console sort of under the dash. So that may pose a problem of sorts, but not much I can do about that. Guess the new piece will just have to age to be a better match.

More to come....

LonestarROB Thu, September 30th, 2010 04:13 PM

Thanks for the info. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

x2mosg Thu, September 30th, 2010 11:40 PM

Got a couple pics today and got to take a look in good sunlight. Gotta love sunny and 81!

It turned out a little lighter than I expected it would. But I think it's gonna work. It's not perfect, but neither am I. Actually think I can dust a coat of that charcoal grey duplicolor between coats and darken it just enough to make it almost identical. Gonna try that anyway.

Take a look:

Give me some opinions guys.

As to the paint and supplier, couldn't ask for much better. Ordered Thursday night late, so Friday, and it arrived Wednesday. Not bad for a custom mix coming from the midwest to Alabama.

Thanks,

David

Hmmm, I don't know. Still seems pretty far off to me. Still don't think those trim pieces are the same color as mine. :/

Do you have the dash pod? If so, take a picture of it next to your trim. :)

x2mosg Fri, October 1st, 2010 12:57 PM

Don't have the pod yet. Probably order it Today or first of next week. Still waiting for my customers to pay me. Everybody is slow paying right now.

It's a lighter shade. Gonna try to overcoat the charcoal grey over the weekend and see how that works. The first coat of I applied I thought was gonna be too dark. Now I think it may have been just about right. I'll keep you updated.

David

x2mosg Fri, October 1st, 2010 01:03 PM

You know, I may end up just going black. These $30 rattle cans are gonna get expensive. LOL!!! Course then the black probably won't match up!! Might just put it in the ashtray like I saw someone else had done.
