Since there's only a nominal 12V from the battery, I would assume that Gryphons and the like have a DC-DC converter to up 12V to 18V for that one pin during PCM programming.
THAT'S pretty amazing! I wouldn't have thought there would be a voltage converter in the Gryphon. Still, I can see how this "feature" keeps the EPROM from being programmed accidentally.
