The canned 87 octane tune is a bit of a compromise between performance and towing, though more specifically set up for towing. THis is the reason that (a) it often doesn't get the best fuel economy and (b) usually will work with most CAI setups.

If you were to go with a custom 87 performance program, the fuel economy benefits should be similar to what you're seeing with the 93 octane program and you'll be able to run less expensive fuel. Some folks have no desire to run 87 octane and that's fine. It's really a matter of personal choice.
