Orion on a dump truck?

I have a 1999 4900 DT466 with an Allison (I believe the MD3060). It's got a dump bed on it. Anyone have experience out there with Orion on this combination, or insights into power levels through the Allison?

First off, welcome to the Forum!!

1999 DT466 in that model are usually factory rated around 230HP (sometimes 250 HP) with the MD3060. This is a very solid drivetrain and takes power increases well.

With that in mind, the Orion running in Level 4 is always a good option to start at, especially if you do not have boost or EGT gauges. Even compared against the factory 250 HP rating, our Level 4 - 250 HP tuning has some very significant difference that lead to better lower and upper RPM performance as well as improved drivability.

Bumping up to Level 5 - 275 HP doesn't seem like much, but again, this has a much broader power curve which results in better hauling capacity and drivability.

In general, we strongly advise to install an EGT gauge (Pyrometer) and a boost gauge if you plan to run Levels 6 or 7. This is to make sure that the Exhaust Temps stay in check. Things like aftermarket or custom exhaust systems can help reduce EGTs, making Level 6 or 7 a feasible option in situations where heavy hauling (like a dump truck) is the primary duty of the vehicle.

The Allison 3060 is a solid trans and can take a good bit of torque input without issue. Even with the power increases the Orion provides, the torque levels are still well within the capabilities of the transmission.
